Bicyclist, 16, Taken to Hospital After Crashing Into Car

Summit resident's bike hit car turning into store on Watchung Avenue, police said.

A 16-year-old bicyclist suffered a head laceration and was taken to the hospital after he crashed into a car that was turning into a store parking lot on Watchung Avenue in Chatham Borough Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The bicyclist, a Summit resident, was issued a summons for operating his bicycle in a careless manner, police department spokesman Kevin O'Shea said.

The accident occurred at about 1:10 p.m. when the bicyclist struck the rear of a car as the vehicle was turning into Bottle King, police said in a news release. Both the bike and car were traveling east on Watchung Avenue.

The bicyclist, who was taken to Morristown Medical Center by the Chatham Emergency Squad, was wearing a
helmet, police said.

Police said New Jersey motor vehicle code requires bicyclists riding on
public roads to fulfill the same responsibilities as motor vehicles. Chatham Police Sgt. Michael Mahoney investigated the accident.
