Photo Gallery: Market Shoppers Vote for Favorite Tomato

16 varieties of tomato competed for the title.

The voters have spoken.

Shoppers at the Chatham Borough Farmers Market on Saturday had the chance to vote on their favorite tomato from 16 contenders by Melick's Town Farm, Muth Family Farm, the Chatham Borough Community Garden and Picklelicious.

"We have all these different tomatoes, and people get to decide which is the best one," said Amy Dziemian, who helped to organize the competition.

Volunteers from the Farmers Market sliced dozens of tomatoes and stuck them with toothpicks and handed out one ticket to each taster to drop into a bowl for their favorite tomato.

As the tomato samples disappeared, a few favorites in in the competition became clear. The black cherry tomato by Melick's Town Farm was a clear favorite, with its purple appearance and bite-sized portion. Shoppers also liked the brandywine tomato by Muth Family Farm, which shoppers described as tasting sweet and succulent, despite its rough, even ugly external appearance.
