BOE Unanimously Approves Budget with 2 Questions

The public will vote on all three items on April 16.

The Board of Education approved the 2013-14 school budget with two extra questions by a unanimous vote of 7-0 Thursday evening. The vote came after two contrasting comments from Gordon Brown and Nabil Mouline. Brown spoke first, saying his last child left the district in 1988 when his taxes were $3,862 per year. Now, he said, he and his wife pay $8,134 per year. "In between, we have paid $124,717 into the school system, and no one has been in school from our family," Brown said. "I call this legalized extortion, paying a lot of money and getting very little back for it." Brown criticized the Mandarin program at Chatham Middle School and Chatham High School, and recommended those who want to learn Mandarin purchase a Rosetta Stone program …

Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe said Fleming's departure to become the principal at Mountain Lakes' Briarcliff Middle School was "good news" for him, "though not necessarily for the district." "He gave us five excellent years as assistant principal, and there is no question that he is ready to run his own building," Fyffe said. Fleming's departure is effective Aug. 4. He was unanimously appointed to the role of principal Briarcliff Middle School in Mountain Lakes. Fleming will replace the school's former principal, who died in April. Tom Belding, the president of Chatham's Board of Education…

"This has been a very good place to finish what has been a very good career," Fifee said of Chatham. "Virtually everbody I've dealt with has been great," he said, and "I've never felt, any time this year, 'I can't wait to get to the last day.'" Fyffe was hired in 2011 to replace outgoing superintendent James O'Neill. Part of his job was to mentor and groom Assistant Superintendent Michael LaSusa to take his place, which he …

I guarantee you drank when you were in high school and you knew people who experienced alcohol related sickness. It disturbs me that the "adults" in this town can sit back and scoff at this behavior, when 20-40 years ago they were …   more ›

High School Parking Lot Expansion Begins

Work underway to install 82 additional spaces before start of school year.

Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe said Tuesday that the issues included a revised lighting plan for the parking lot, the wall height along a certain part of the lot, and, what Fyffe said is the biggest item for discussion, stormwater management. "I think it's just different interpretations of what's required [in stormwater management," Fyffe said. Fyffe said he believed the discussion on …
