American Classic 'Damn Yankees' Hits Local Stage

'Measure for Measure' and 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' also opening soon.

Everyone seems to have Olympic fever these days, and while there's no show about gymnastics or diving playing on stage anywhere, you can see an old-fashioned show about another sport—baseball. That's because Pax Amicus Castle Theater in Budd Lake is presenting "Damn Yankees" Aug. 3 to 19. The show follows Joe Boyd, a fan of the hapless Washington Senators who makes a deal with Mr. Applegate (also known as the devil) to turn his team into a winner. It features famous songs like "Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets." Other shows opening soon include "Measure for Measure" at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," at the Brook Arts Center. There's also still time to see "Nunsense" at …

One-Act Plays a Short Twist for Some Summer Stages

Check out something different as two theaters present short productions.

Full-length plays, both comedies and dramas, are often found on North Jersey's stages, but this summer, two area theaters are offering something a bit different with productions of one-act plays. Chatham Community Players are getting ready for the 18th annual Jersey Voices One Act Festival, which begins July 27. The summer tradition offers New Jersey playwrights a chance to get their work performed on a stage. And Chester Theatre Groups is offering "An Evening of One-Acts" July 27-28. This special event will put the spotlight on two short plays, "Exchange" by Bennett Fisher and "Scooter Thomas Makes it to the Top of the World," by Peter Parnell." That's just the start of what's happening on area's stages. There are plenty of concerts to …

From Shakespeare to "The Music Man," theater groups present big-name performances.

There are good plays and then there are great plays. And the truly great ones endure for decades, or even centuries. William Shakespeare's name is virtually synonymous with classic, and the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is kicking off its 50th anniversary season with "Henry IV Part I" this week. The play is about Henry IV protecting his kingdom and Prince Hal's rise in power. It also features Falstaff, considered by many to be The Bard's greatest creation. A newer classic play, Thonton Wilder's "Our Town" will be performed by Somerset Valley Players, beginning June 8. And Villagers Theatre in Somerset will soon be marching to the musical classic "The Music Man." Classic TV is even coming to the area when Pax Amicus Castle Theatre in …
