The mobile planetarium will be used at Chatham's elementary schools.
The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded a $19,300 grant to the principals of Lafayette Avenue School (LAS), Milton Avenue School (MAS), Washington Avenue School (WAS) and Southern Boulevard School (SBS) for the purchase of a STARLAB Portable Planetarium. STARLAB planetariums help students learn more about astronomy and the study of the planets and the solar system. The planetarium is a dome of opaque vinyl with a projector which displays images from space on the dome's interior. The images are displayed through STARLAB cylinders made of film which blocks all light except what is needed to display the images themselves. Colleen Markley, president of CEF, said the planetarium will provide an invaluable learning experience to local …
The Chatham Education Foundation gave $60,000 in grants over the 2010-11 academic year.
The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) said Friday the total amount of funds the organization distributed to The School District of the Chathams over the last 12 months was $60,000, a similar amount to how much they gave over the 2009-2010 academic year. The funds are distributed in grants and donations for special school and educational programs in Chatham schools that the district is not able to fund. President Colleen Markley said CEF funds "enable [teachers and principals] to continue to be innovative and creative educators in the face of budget cuts." CEF offers grants at various levels to improve the classroom and school experience. Teachers can apply for grants of up to $1,500 for materials to enhance and improve curriculum in ways …

The funds will be used at Chatham High School, Washington Avenue School and Lafayette Avenue School.
The Chatham Education Foundation recently donated over $20,000 dollars to the School District of the Chathams for use in three schools. Chatham High School was granted $9,997.66 for the purchase of several netbook computers, an addition to several netbook computers already available for student use. Another $9,740 was donated to Washington Avenue school to purchase 13 SMART document cameras, which "[allow] documents to be magnified, viewed and annotated directly on the SMART Board," according to the CEF's Fall/Winter 2010 newsletter. The CEF also donated $720 to Lafayette Avenue School for fifth grade teacher Erik Yates. This is Yates' third CEF grant. Yates said that the model of CEF allows for tools to get into the classrooms without an …

The CEF is doing the town a tremendous service. That's why I object to the press release providing cover to the school board by saying the CEF funds things that the school district budget "cannot address." It should say "chooses to not address" because the district puts higher priority on funding other less important things. The new High School parking lot is a waste of 100x the money of new …   more ›
