Annual event will be held Saturday.
The Chatham Township Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up for its annual family celebration and inviting local residents to come hungry to Saturday's 12th Annual Family BBQ and Pig Roast. The event will be held at the fire department's headquarters, at 495 River Road, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. rain or shine. Tickets can be purchased in advance online and will be sold for $30 for adults and $10 for children ages 5 to 18. Children under 5 can come for free. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Chatham Township Firefighters Benevolent Fund. The event will be held rain or shine.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
A small house fire on Fairmount Avenue in Chatham Township was quickly brought under control by local departments Thursday night, and no injuries were reported from the scene. Township Fire Chief Jim Pignatello, Jr. said the department received the call at 8:06 p.m. He said it took only one hose line to bring the fire under control, "despite freezing temperatures." Lt. Steven Hennelly said two township officers, Michael Bloom and Michael Sawyer, were the first to arrive at the scene and were able to put most of the fire out using the extinguishers carried in their patrol cars. Chatham Disposal will collect trees in a curbside collection on Jan. 12.
Chatham Township residents have three ways of disposing of their Christmas trees this year. As usual, Chatham Disposal, which does curbside waste pickup for most residents in the township, will collect Christmas trees on the second Saturday in January. This year, that's Jan. 12. If you don't want to wait that long, however, there are other options. The Chatham Township Fire Department will accept Christmas trees through Jan. 12. Trees can be left at the department's River Road Headquarters at 495 River Rd. between the two grey sheds in the back of the parking lot. Curt Ritter, president of the Chatham Turkey Trot, said 435 runners participated in this year's Turkey Trot and raised $14,300 in charity funds. "This was by far our most successful race ever," Ritter said, adding these numbers are far greater than the participation and donations in 2011. In 2010, 170 runners raised $3,500. Money raised will be donated to the Chatham Township Fire Department and the Diabetes Research Institute. The school principal reported the smell of gasoline outside the school building, and no trace of gas was found inside.
The Chatham Township Fire Department called PSE&G in to investigate a gas leak outside of Lafayette Avenue School Monday. According to Matt Chase of the Chatham Township Fire Department, LAS Principal Cheryl Caggiano reported the smell of gasoline outside the school building at about noon Monday. Chase said the fire department found "minor traces of gas on the outside of the building," but no traces inside either LAS or Chatham High School. Since there was no gas reading inside the schools, Chase said there was no need to evacuate students and faculty. "We called PSE&G," Chase said. "It's not a major leak." The Chatham Township Police and Green Village Fire Department also responded to the gas leak.

Fire department officials had no estimate for how long it would take before JCP&L arrived on the scene.
The Chatham Township Fire Department responded to Tanglewood Lane Thursday when a power wire fell and caused an outage in surrounding homes. Matt Chase of the Chatham Township Fire Department said the wire fell at about 6:30 p.m. At least one block near the downed wire at 15 Tanglewood Ln. lost power, and Chase said other homes in the neighborhood could also be affected. The wire was not touching the roadway and did not pose a danger to pedestrians or motor vehicle traffic. Chase said there was no estimated arrival time for JCP&L to come and fix the wire. "It could be anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours," he said.

As Fire Prevention Week goes on, the Chatham Township Fire Department hopes to recruit new members. As the population of Chatham Township grows, so does the number of calls that come into the fire department. According to Lt. Matt Glogolich, the volume of fire incidents in the township has increased from less than 200 incidents in 2008 to over 300 in 2011. "With the increase in call volume, coupled with the majority of incidents being during the daytime hours, the department is faced with a problem which most volunteer Fire Departments are dealing with now," Glogolich said: "Members who are able to respond." The annual family barbeque in Chatham Township raises money for the Fireman's Benevolence Fund.
Hundreds gathered at the Chatham Township Fire Department on River Road Saturday for the department's annual Family Barbeque and Oktoberfest. The department opened up their trucks for curious young eyes, and even set up a play area with the hose for children to enjoy while parents socialized and enjoyed the burgers, hot dogs, roast pig and other food offered. Local band Ten Foot Tall provided music, and kids who didn't want to get wet played in the inflatable house set up in the firehouse.
