The Chatham Township Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Chatham Township Committee will introduce its 2013 budget for approval when it meets Thursday. At the Feb. 14 committee meeting, Administrator Thomas E. Ciccarone proposed a tax rate decrease of 3/10 of a cent. For the average home assessed at $750,000, this would mean a tax decrease of $25.50. The 2012 tax rate was at 28.8 cents per $100 of assessed value, for a total average municipal tax of $2,152. If the committee votes to approve the budget as proposed, that amount will fall to 28.5 cents per $100. As currently drafted, the 2013 municipal budget would include a tax levy decrease of 3/10 a cent.
Chatham Township residents may get a break in their municipal taxes this year, albeit a small one. Administrator Thomas E. Ciccarone said Thursday that the municipality has proposed a tax rate decrease of 3/10 of a cent. In 2011 and 2012, the township kept local taxes flat, thanks in a large part to the same things that have allowed them to lower the tax levy in 2013: shared services, ratables within the township and consolidating positions. Under…

Continues deal after spending less than $1,000 on the service last year.
Chatham Township will continue its animal services contract with local municipalities – Madison, Harding, Livingston, New Providence and Millburn – after spending less than $1,000 on the service last year. When the interlocal animal services agreement was first presented to the committee in March 2011, Ciccarone had anticipated the total cost to the township to be “well under $10,000,” making last year’s cost much lower than expected. “It’s been a huge financial success for us,” he said during the township committee’s Aug. 16 meeting, adding that the township has only spent $500 so far this year. The township switched over to the service in 2011 after terminating its contract with St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, which administrator Tom…

Hunter Technologies awarded the contract for about $60,000.
The Chatham Township Committee unanimously voted 4-0 to award a contract for telelphone services to Hunter Technologies for $61,023.85 Thursday. The contract approved Thursday covers only the equipment, installation and warranty. Service is covered under a separate contract and will cost the township about $1,400 per month, Ciccarone said. The committee discussed this contract at two previous meetings, one in April and one in November 2011. Township Administrator Thomas E. Ciccarone approved a purchase order the phone system from Hunter for more than $63,000 in 2011 without approval of the committee. At the time, Hunter was not approved as a state contract vendor. During the meeting Thursday he described the errors as "technical mistakes…

With a rising population, the township is eligible for a third consumption license.
The Chatham Township Committee will introduce an ordinance to amend the number of liquor licenses in town at their meeting Thursday. The township can create and bid off one consumption (C) liquor license per 3,000 residents. They currently have two C licenses and a population of about 10,000 people. "Currently, our ordinance only allows for two," Mayor Nicole Hagner said. Those two licenses are currently held by Charlie Brown's Steakhouse and the Fairmount Country Club. The ordinance is listed on the agenda for first introduction. If it passes, a second reading and public hearing will be scheduled. Besides the auction price, the license has an additional fee of $1,595. The winning bid must prove the establishment where the license will be …

This reduction is good news to start the holiday weekend. I hope that this Spring the Township's budget will stretch to having pavement sweepers clean away the débris that has accumulated along the curbs on River Road - something that hasn't been done for a long time :-) Thank you!   more ›
