What Are You Thankful For This Thanksgiving?

Family and friends? A week of no school? Just having your power back? Let us know!

While sitting at my desk working Tuesday, something perfectly ordinary happened: My phone started buzzing. This is not unusual. I typically get at least 150 emails per day, up to a dozen phone calls and between 20 and 30 text messages, most from the Chatham organizations I follow on Twitter. These organizations include Chatham High School, Chatham Borough, the Chatham Township Police Department and the Library of the Chathams. It was a tweet from the library that made my phone buzz in this particular instance. I've included the text below, complete with hashtags: What this tweet fails to communicate is that the library was supposed to be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Tropical Storm Sandy was predicted to move much slower than it did, and the…

Where to Eat Thanksgiving Dinner

Hey, not all of us can cook.

Sometimes the pressure of trying to cook a turkey, along with starters, sides and desserts, plus table settings and finding the right wines and cleaning up afterwards, can just be too much. For those who prefer to have someone else do the cooking this Thanksgiving, here are some local restaurants that offer to cook the turkey—or other main dishes—for you. Restaurant Serenade is fully booked on Thanksgiving, but they are offering their Thanksgiving menu as take-out and the bar will be open. This year's Thanksgiving menu is $69 a plate, $35 for children 10 and under. Some of the menu options are: A full menu is attached as a PDF. Restaurant Serenade will open from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Call (973) 701-0303 for reservations. For the third year, …

An 'Oldie but a Goodie' Thanksgiving Dessert

Pumpkin cheesecake with bourbon-sour-cream icing has become a holiday staple at the Chmiel house.

For Paula Chmiel, Thanksgiving traditions often come in the form of cooking up those tried-and-true favorites that make it such a special holiday. The South Orange resident is a professional chef. In her family, pumpkin cheescake is one of those recipes that people talk about for weeks both before and after the holiday, so give this one a try if you want to impress! Originally published in Gourmet in 1990, it was a recipe Paula noticed on the magazine cover while at college and she just had to make it. Jump ahead 21 years and the same recipe is still alive and well both in the Chmiel house and online (www.epicurious.com), though she has changed it up a bit here and there. While Paula isn't working in a restaurant kitchen these days — she's…

Despite Sandy, NJ Travel to Remain Steady

AAA New Jersey predicts about 1 million residents of the Garden State will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend.

About one million New Jersey residents and 43.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving weekend, AAA New Jersey predicts. The impact of Hurricane Sandy is still uncertain, especially in the mid-Atlantic and northeast regions. Cathleen Lewis, the director of Public Affairs for AAA New Jersey, said, "While many residents [of New Jersey] may cancel travel plans, many others may change travel plans to accommodate or assist displaced friends and family." How will we get there? Sandy may influence how New Jerseyans will travel this holiday. As Lewis said, "Rental cars have become a coveted commodity by those who lost vehicles in the storm.” AAA recommends confirming any existing reservations for a rental car with the …
