Boro Wins Silver Sustainable Jersey Certification

Chatham Borough became one of 10 towns certified as silver level sustainable town, thanks to the efforts of Cindy Steffens.

Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce Harris announced Monday that Sustainable Jersey has awarded the borough with Silver Certification for 2012. Harris was quick to credit Cindy Steffens with the credit the "significant achievement" of winning silver level certification. Steffens, who chairs the Green Initiatives Committee, was a "taskmaster," Harris said, who outlined all the projects and the work needed to win silver certification and made sure they all got done in time for the May 31 deadline. Only 10 towns were awarded silver level certification through Sustainable Jersey this year, Harris said. Councilman Len Resto said, "It was really a core group of six volunteers who made this happen," with Steffens taking the lead. "Other towns that got …

Township Expected to Reaffirm Idle-Free Policy

The policy puts a three-minute idling limit near businesses, schools and churches in the township.

The Chatham Township Committee is expected to approve a resolution Thursday reaffirming its commitment to keeping certain areas in town idle-free. The resolution is an echo of one passed in 2007 which created idle-free zones for motorists near government buildings, such as the Chatham Township Municipal Building and Chatham Township Police Department, schools and businesses, according to Mayor Nicole Hagner. "This resolution [will] move beyond New Jersey's no-idling code of three minutes," Hagner said. The resolution comes at a time when the township is preparing for another application to Sustainable Jersey. To continue as a Sustainable Jersey town, township officials must take new steps towards green living and reaffirm their commitments…

When did I ever call a person a racist, nobody, hack or coward? I ask that you please post the link (your good at that!) that backs up your accusation. This is a typical Templin slanderous accusation made to distract. Let me guess… you want us to visit www.savegreenvillage.com to find out when I called these people names. The Chatham Borough Council approved a resolution supporting the grant application through Sustainable Jersey

The Chatham Borough Council gave their support to a Sustainable Jersey grant application for a rain garden at Memorial Park. The grant, which is funded by Wal-Mart, totals $10,000. If the borough wins the grant, the money will go toward the installation of a rain garden at Memorial Park. Council Member Len Resto said that Cindy Steffens, the chair of the Green Intiatives Committee, has been working on the application as part of her efforts to gain Silver Certification in the Sustainable Jersey program this year. "We think we have a very good chance [of winning the grant]," Resto said, "and we've gotten some good cooperation from Stanley Church and Town & Country [Garden Club]." A rain garden is planted in a shallow or low-lying area, …

Rocket Composter Arrives in Chatham

The Rocket Composter will be installed at Chatham High School as soon as the weather allows.

A Rocket Composter ordered for Chatham High School recently arrived in the township, where it will remain in storage until it can be installed at the school. The composter was purchased with a $25,000 grant through Sustainable Jersey, which Chatham Township won in September. The grant was funded by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. About $20,000 of the grant money went toward purchasing the composter, while the rest of the money will go toward educational programs about composting. Patricia Colington, a member of the Environment Commission of Chatham Township, came up with the idea and wrote the grant application for the "On-Site School Food Composting Program." Once all the snow melts, a date will be set for the composter to be installed. Until then…

Lofty Green Initiatives Goals for 2011

The committee wants silver certification through Sustainable Jersey, but they need help to get there.

Chatham Borough's Green Initiative Committee celebrated the borough's bronze certification by Sustainable Jersey with sparkling cider and pastries at last week's meeting, the last in November. Committee Chair Cindy Steffens, though, wants to find ways to keep the momentum going. "We have all these things we could do," Steffens said. "We just have to figure that out." Steffens, who recently attended Sustainable Jersey's League of Municipalities Convention, arrived at the meeting with a whirlwind of ideas for Chatham Borough's sustainable future. Possibilities included making municipal vehicles greener, creating green challenges among residents to "keep the excitement going," and implementing community partnership initiatives to encourage …

Feedback from Sustainable Jersey Wednesday leaves Green Initiatives Committee confident in bronze certification.
