Multiple Questions in Preliminary School Budget

The school board approved a preliminary budget with two additional questions.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams approved a preliminary budget for the 2013-14 school year which includes a 2.6 percent increase on the local tax levy and a second and third question for the voters in April. The estimated expenditures for the school district in the 2013-14 school year total $65,131,110. With a tax increase of 2.6 percent, the total amount to be collected through local taxes will be $55,409,233. At this rate the average borough household would pay an additional $209.90 throughout the year, or $17.49 per month. R. Swanson and L22 - yes, right on. With two children in the Chatham school district myself, I can vouch for the fact that although our schools are of good quality, they are not the be-all end-all in education, and as R. Make-Up Days Set for Those Missed in Sandy's Wake

The cancellation of the NJEA convention this week opened two full days for school to be in session.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams unanimously passed a resolution canceling early dismissal Wednesday and reinstating school Thursday and Friday. These two school days will help make up for days missed in the wake of Tropical Storm Sandy, when all Chatham schools were closed for five days. Milton Avenue School, Southern Boulevard School and Washington Avenue Schools remained closed Monday, and other schools had delayed openings. The school year has four snow days built into each school year. Tropical Storm Sandy took five days out of the year, and another nor'easter threatens to take more. Parents asked the board to not take additional school days out of spring break because juniors need those days to visit …

Chatham K-3 Schools Closed Monday

The Board of Education meet Monday will address the missed school days.

Primary schools in the School District of the Chathams will be closed Monday due to lingering effects from Tropical Storm Sandy. Lafayette Avenue School, Chatham Middle School and Chatham High School will open as usual while Southern Boulevard School, Washington Avenue School and Milton Avenue School will be closed. Superintendent Michael LaSusa said, "Our intention is to provide instruction to the primary students in some way on Tuesday." LaSusa said further information about primary student instruction and making up the school days lost after Tropical Storm Sandy will come out of the Board of Education meeting Monday night.
