New School Board Member to be Appointed

Vacancy occurred when Stephen Barna stepped down from the BOE in September.

The Board of Education will announce their new member when they meet Monday evening. The new board member will represent Chatham Borough and was selected by the borough's other representatives on the board, including Jill Weber, Richard Connors and Board President Thomas K. Belding. The member will be sworn in and will serve the remainder of Barna's term, which will expire in April. Stephen Barna of the borough formerly held the seat. He submitted a letter of resignation to Belding on Friday, Sept. 14 due to other opportunities. He told Chatham Patch he was already unsure about whether he would run for a third full term. Applicants Sought for Board of Education Vacancy

Two applicants have contacted the board so far.

Board of Education President Thomas K. Belding said the School District of the Chathams continues to seek interested residents from Chatham Borough to fill a vacant seat on the board. The vacancy was created by Stephen Barna, who submitted a letter of resignation on Friday, Sept. 14. Peter Daquila, the district's business administrator, said two applicants have come forward as of Thursday, both of whom are currently in interviews. When asked how many applicants he would like to have, Belding answered three to five. The term expires in April, with the opportunity to run for another three-year term in the 2013 school elections, also in April. BOE to Recognize Former President's Contribution

Stephen Barna offered his resignation from the board on Friday, Sept. 14.

Board of Education President Thomas K. Belding will make a statement acknowledging the resignation of Stephen Barna, a former president of the board. Barna submitted his letter of resignation to Belding on Friday, Sept. 14 due to other opportunities. He told Chatham Patch he was already unsure about whether he would run for a third full term in April. Barna, an associate director at Verizon Wireless began his time on the board as an interim member, replacing a former member. He was then elected to two three-year terms representing the borough on the Board of Education. Former President Resigns From Board of Education

Stephen Barna declined to comment on his resignation from the Board of Education.

Stephen Barna submitted a letter of resignation to Board of Education President Thomas K. Belding Friday afternoon. "We are very, very sorry to see him needing to leave the board. He's been a great member of the board, a former president and he's sat on virtually all board committees," Belding said. Barna confirmed the resignation. Belding said Barna was resigning "because of some other opportunities that have presented themselves." The resignation creates a vacancy for a resident of Chatham Borough to sit on the Board of Education until Barna's term expires in April, according to Business Administrator Peter Daquila.
