Saint Patrick's of Chatham and Saint Vincent's of Madison hosted the Second Annual Fun Fair Sunday afternoon.
Though Sunday afternoon was gray and misty, smiles were not in short supply at the Second Annual Family Fun Fair in Madison. Saint Patrick’s Church partnered with Saint Vincent’s of Madison to host a day filled with games, treats, and plenty of good times. The inclement weather caused the event to be moved indoors, but the limited space did not limit the activities. The Fair boasted typical carnival fare such as sand art, face painting, cotton candy, and a moon bounce. Children as young as two eagerly played games, won prizes, and enjoyed the day. Members of the Youth Group from both parishes coordinated games such as the Football Toss, and Plinko, doling out prizes to the best. Maggie Grady, the Youth Minister at St. Patrick’s for seven …

Oktoberfest is second event in celebration of the life of the Rev. Edward Hinds.
An Oktoberfest, filled with German food, beer and music, will take place this Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chatham Borough. The Oktoberfest—the parish's first—will mark the second of seven "Many Hands, Many Hearts, One Community" events over six weeks to celebrate the life of the late pastor, the Rev. Edward Hinds, who was murdered last October. "It was such a tragic thing that happened, that we wanted to direct energy toward something positive," Karen Swartz, a parishioner assisting with the event's publicity, said. "Luckily, we have a number of wonderful volunteers who have helped to bring all of this together." Swartz said the basic feel of the evening will be light and casual, with a buffet of various Bavarian foods …

Outdoor Mass and barbecue kicks off series of events in honor of Rev. Ed Hinds.
The members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chatham Borough gathered at Lum Avenue Field for an outdoor Mass and picnic Sunday afternoon. The picnic was the first community event of several planned over the coming weeks, including an Oktoberfest and a 5k run, all to honor the slain Rev. Ed Hinds. Parishioners brought lawn chairs for the outdoor Mass. The Knights of Columbus barbecued hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs. The Youth Group provided face painting, sand art and temporary tattoos to children, and nearby parents promoted volunteer opportunities to children and adults at various organizations. Meg Moran, 14, won the apple pie contest against several stiff competitors. Check out the video for how she made her pie. Have some …

The Rev. Robert Mitchell, they say, will bring the church a much-needed sense of continuity.
"Welcome Fr. Bob!" a banner proclaimed in an unusual font Sunday at St. Patrick's Church. The letters were made out of colorful handprints, the work of the students who attended the parish school next door. It hung underneath the balcony—almost eye level to the chancel—where the new full-time pastor, the Rev. Robert Mitchell, presided over Mass in the sanctuary for the first time. Mitchell, previously the pastor of at St. Jude Parish in Budd Lake for 12 years, said he was very grateful for the warm and welcoming congregation. Moving to a new parish made him feel like a "child" again, he said. It was the little things that did it. He didn't know where the light switches were, for example, or how to use the microphone. But church members …

The Rev. Robert Mitchell began his new job this week.
The Rev. Robert Mitchell began his first day of work as the pastor of St. Patrick's Church on Wednesday without much fanfare. And for Mitchell, who exudes humility, that was the perfect way to start. "It was a nice snowy morning with six people at church to greet me," Mitchell said. "It was a nice way to break in." Mitchell became the parish's first full-time pastor since former Rev. Edward Hinds was murdered in late October inside the church building. The church's former janitor, Jose Feliciano, has been charged with murder in connection with Hinds' death. Mitchell, who comes to St. Patrick's after 12 years at St. Jude Parish in Budd Lake, said he has already seen that church members "live with the loss of a good man." "He did a lot of …
