The grant will go to purchase the Pearsons Education Developmental Reading Assessment Management System.
The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded a grant to the School District of the Chathams of $9,600 to go toward the purchase of a Pearsons Education Developmental Reading Assessment Management System. The system will help give assessment-driven reading instruction to students in grades 1 through 5, and will help teachers assess student reading levels. Faculty at Lafayette Avenue School, Milton Avenue School, Southern Boulevard School and Washington Avenue School will be able to use the system. The grant request was submitted by the district's Supervisor of English Language Arts K-5 Helen S. Comba and by the principals of the aforementioned schools. Susan Neibert, who died on Dec. 29, worked at Southern Boulevard School for 17 years.
When Michael Neibert attended his wife Susan's memorial service on Jan. 4, there was one thing that left him "pleasantly surprised." "There were a lot of parents and former students there, people who knew Sue from Southern Boulevard School, and came to the service," Neibert said. "She knew a lot of kids in town, no question about that." Susan, a longtime resident of Chatham Township, died on Dec. 29 at the age of 60 after what her husband called "a long battle with cancer." She was employed at Southern Boulevard School for 17 years as a teacher's aid and a secretary in the front office, in a job which her husband said was one of the great passions of her life. From elementary school students to high schoolers, 'tis the season for Chatham's music students to strut their stuff.
Families within the Chathams will know the holidays are here by the bevy of holiday concerts within the School District of the Chathams, which kick off at 7:30 p.m. Monday with the Chatham High School choral concert at the Chatham High auditorium. PSE&G will not allow parking at the gazebo site, but could let the Chatham Township gazebo stay with other conditions.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said she believes PSE&G will agree to let the Chatham Township gazebo remain in its current spot. "We did have a follow-up meeting with PSE&G," Hagner said, "and I am pleased to be able to say we will likely be able to keep the gazebo at the location on Southern Boulevard, with modifications." The utility company has not specified what those modifications will be, but Hagner and Chatham Township Administrator Thomas E. Ciccarone said parking at the gazebo will definitely not be permitted. Ciccarone has also submitted an application to PSE&G to allow parking on the gravel lot at Colony Pool once more. School officials ask parents to drive up to the school or drop students off near Colony Pool.
Ralph Pesapane, the principal at Southern Boulevard School, knows there will be one major adjustment that will be difficult for students and parents to get used to this year. "The gazebo is closed to us," he said. "We can't use it anymore." PSE&G owns the property along Southern Boulevard and recently revoked a licensing agreement which permitted the Chatham Township gazebo as a structure on the lot. This also means motorists can no longer use the parking lot or the park. The dirt driveway and parking lot adjacent to the gazebo has traditionally been used as an alternative drop-off and pick-up location for people who wish to avoid the front of the school. Student population creates some shuffling, as enrollment falls, but not by much.
Students and parents at Southern Boulevard School (SBS) will notice several classrooms in a slightly different location from last year. Principal Ralph Pesapane said several classrooms which were occupied by the first or third grade have been shuffled around to accommodate an additional kindergarten classroom. As part of the 2012-13 school budget, the district added a fifth section of kindergarten to SBS. Kindergarten enrollment is already over 100 students, and even though kindergarten only meets for half-day sessions, Pesapane said the space is already needed. New kindergarteners are being directed to Southern Boulevard School, superintendent says.
In his first Board of Education meeting as superintendent, Michael LaSusa told the board kindergarten enrollment at Washington Avenue School (WAS) has reached total capacity. "Any students who come to Washington Avenue School as kindergarteners now are being directed to Southern Boulevard, where we added that fifth section," LaSusa said. Students who register for kindergarten at WAS are now being directed to Southern Boulevard School (SBS), where the district added a fifth section of kindergarten. The district runs kindergarten as a half-day program, in either the mornings or the afternoons. Utility company prepares to begin construction of North Central Reliability Project.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said PSE&G "is terminating licensing agreements at Colony Pool and the gazebo on Southern Boulevard." The gazebo, Hagner said, will have to be moved from its current location, since Hagner said the utility company is "not willing" to have a structure in their right-of-way. "We're currently looking for a suitable location in the township," she said. The termination came two months before PSE&G is expected to begin construction on their North Central Reliability Project in Chatham. The company has already begun construction in some towns. President of Chatham High's Environmental Club turns attention to a butterfly reserve in Chatham Township.
Summer may be a time for some students to slow down and take a break, but rising senior Sophie Kapica isn't one of them. "This summer I just wanted to do something else," Kapica said, "and I'm really interested in the environment." Kapica, the president of Chatham High School's Environmental Club, worked with the Chatham Township Environmental Commission and other club members to help care for a native monarch butterfly wildlife habitat near the Southern Boulevard School parking lot. Kapica and others recently spent an afternoon weeding the habitat of invasive plant species and caring for milkweed plants, which monarchs use to feed on and to lay their eggs on.
