Chatham Schools Will Have Off May 24

District will return one unused school day, will look into returning more in the future.

All Chatham public schools will have off May 24 due to a surplus of unused snow days, Superintendent Dr. Michael LaSusa said during Monday’s board of education meeting. LaSusa said he will have the schools’ principals officially announce the off day, which will immediately precede Memorial Day weekend, to parents and students this week. Although all of the district schools have at least two snow days left over, LaSusa said that the district usually only gives one day back. In response, board member Matthew Gilfillan asked if it is possible to give two back. LaSusa said it might be possible in the future but would be difficult for this year with short notice. “We can look in the future into putting two back, but that was not published in …

Presidents Day Holiday Cancelled by School Board

Students and staff members will have school on Feb. 18.

School will be open in the School District of the Chathams on Feb. 18, the school board voted Monday. The 6-2 vote to have school on Presidents Day came after a discussion of the school days missed after Tropical Storm Sandy hit the area. Schools were closed for a full week after the storm, using up the district's entire reserve of five snow days for the year. Milton Avenue School, Southern Boulevard School and Washington Avenue School remained closed an additional day. The school was able to schedule two make-up days on Nov. 8 and 9, but this leaves Lafayette Avenue School, Chatham High School and Chatham Middle School with only two snow days for the rest of the year and the K-3 schools with only one snow day. "The first question is, how …

so, what is the big deal? If you read the last two paragraphs it seems like a compromise (proposal by Mr. Belding) was agreed to 6-2. Last year it was MLK day this year Presidents day. Seems reasonable. End of story. Unless you are Hugs whose kids will miss both days because she can't be told what to do   more ›

Make-Up Days Set for Those Missed in Sandy's Wake

The cancellation of the NJEA convention this week opened two full days for school to be in session.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams unanimously passed a resolution canceling early dismissal Wednesday and reinstating school Thursday and Friday. These two school days will help make up for days missed in the wake of Tropical Storm Sandy, when all Chatham schools were closed for five days. Milton Avenue School, Southern Boulevard School and Washington Avenue Schools remained closed Monday, and other schools had delayed openings. The school year has four snow days built into each school year. Tropical Storm Sandy took five days out of the year, and another nor'easter threatens to take more. Parents asked the board to not take additional school days out of spring break because juniors need those days to visit …

BOE Approves 4-Day Weekend for Memorial Day

Fyffe recommended closing schools on May 25.

Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe recommended the Board of Education close school on Friday, May 25 to use up an extra snow day. The board previously approved four make-up days in the wake of the late October snow storm, which closed school for a full week. "It is the recommendation of the administration that since we have unused snow days," Fyffe said, "that we close school on May 25, thereby extending the Memorial Day Weekend." Typically districts budget four snow days for the entire year, all of which were depleted after the storm. When the area was hit by more than 8 inches of snow on Oct. 29, school was canceled for five days because of power outages, downed power lines and tree branches and unsafe driving and walking conditions …

District to Cancel Unused Snow Day

A record warm winter means the district has left-over school days.

After the Board of Education approved four make-up school days in the wake of the October snow storm, Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe said two of those days were no longer necessary. Each year the district allows for up to four days of cancellations due to snow or other severe weather. When the area was hit by more than 8 inches of snow on Oct. 29, school was canceled for five days because of power outages, downed power lines and tree branches and unsafe driving and walking conditions among the schools and both Chatham Borough and Chatham Township. As a result, the district held school on three make-up days so far this year: Jan. 2, Jan. 16 (Martin Luther King Day) and Feb. 17, which was an early dismissal day. A fourth make-up day was…

Chatham Students to Have School on MLK Day

Interim Superintendent said schools will observe the holiday with 'meaningful activities' district-wide.

The Board of Education voted 5 to 3 to approve three extra days of school to make up for days lost during the late October snow storm, including holding classes on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The holiday, celebrated this year on Jan. 16, is traditionally given as a day off for most school districts and for many companies. Days approved as make-up class days are: Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe wrote a letter to district parents, attached to this article, stating that all district schools "will provide meaningful activities to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of Dr. King." He also noted the holiday will be observed in next year's calendar and "all subsequent calendars." "Everyone was reluctant to touch MLK Day," Board…

There will be no recognition at Chatham High School. I along with my peers with be spending the federal holiday taking tests. Also last Friday teachers briefed classes about what we will be learning on the 16th and none of it related to MLK. If we are going to have school at least have an assembly or restrict teachers from giving assessments, this is absolutely ridiculous. All the parents saying …   more ›

BOE Debates Make-up School Days after Storm

Many favor not using Martin Luther King Day as school make-up day because of a poor perceptions

The School District of the Chathams is looking for ways to make up instructional school  days lost because of the week off from the October Nor’easter snow storm, Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe said during the board meeting at Chatham Township Municipal Building on Monday night. As a means of compensating for the missed instructional days, Fyffe, who met with senior administration staff earlier Monday, proposed scheduling three makeup days that are firm - Jan. 2, the first day after the winter break and during the February weekend, Tuesday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan. 21.  “That would give us three snow days which we would have essentially in the bank,” Fyffe said. The district has used all of its five days, one more than the four …

I'm with Sunnypatch. Its a great idea and a great move to spend the whole day IN school honoring MLK instead of on the ski slopes or hanging out on main street. Somethings gotta give. I'm half Jewish and I don't take offense to not getting Yom Kippur or chanukah off. Let's all go to the next BOE meeting and voice our opinions there.   more ›
