Shunpike Field to Receive More Lighting

Two additional light poles to be added.

The Chatham Township Committee unanimously approved a resolution awarding a contract for two more light posts at Shunpike Field. Quality Electrical Construction submitted the lowest responsible bid for the project at $59,241. "This is to award the final two light posts that we didn't get in previously," Mayor Nicole Hagner said. The Chatham Athletic Foundation donated funds to pay for the two additional light posts, and for the lights that went onto the field at its opening. Shunpike Field opened in October 2011 after 17 months of construction. The field includes turf and grass fields. Crestwood Drive Improvements Township Engineer John Ruschke said another project in the town, drainage and roadway improvements along Crestwood Drive, were …

These lights are being donated by CAF, like it says in the article. I don't think the town is contributing to the cost of these lights.   more ›

Girls Golf, Municipal Fields Win CAF Grants

The Chatham Athletic Foundation announced their 2012 grant winners Wednesday.

The Chatham Athletic Foundation (CAF) announced they have awarded four grants totaling $27,500 Wednesday, impacting thousands of Chatham residents, as part of their 2012 spring grant program. Chatham Township walked away with the largest grant: a total of $15,000 to enhance the lighting on the turf field at Shunpike Field. A press release from CAF reads, "the funding and enhanced lighting system will enable baseball and softball teams to play ball under the lights and help increase safety and use of the turf field." Chatham Borough also won a $4,000 grant award for the resurfacing, refurbishment and safety coating of the basketball court at Memorial Field. The project was finished in time for the rededication of Memorial Park in May. …

I hope that the CAF doesn't forget that the Cougar Lacrosse Club committed funds to the lights at Shunpike. Maybe they should consider amending their press release to "the funding and enhanced lighting system will enable "all field-sports" teams to play ball under the lights, where the lights go out on all fields at the same time".   more ›

Text of Paul Ivans' Speech at Shunpike Field Opening

In case you missed the event, hear what CAF President Ivans had to say about the long-awaited Shunpike Field Opening.

The following is the full text of Paul Ivans' speech at the opening of Shunpike Field on Oct. 1, 2011. Ivans is the president of the Chatham Athletic Foundation: Wow, look around you today, at the fantastic athletic fields and this beautiful courtyard we’re all standing in…as friends, neighbors, coaches and elected officials, you should all be extremely proud to be part of such an amazing community that has accomplished such tremendous things to help the young athletes in Chatham. As a Chatham resident for almost 20 years, a father of 2 young athletes in town, and a coach of hundreds of young athletes in Chatham over the years, I am tremendously proud and humbled by the efforts of our community in pulling together to help our local …

Shunpike Field: 'The Answer to Our Joint Problems'

After 17 months, field opens, expected to provide many opportunities for both municipalities.

A small crowd gathered at Shunpike Field on Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the completion of the project that took 17 months for what was originally estimated to be a six-month project. "It was a massive undertaking and turned out to be the wettest season we have had with an unprecedented amount of snow," said Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner, who added that it took 800 trucks of fill, 3,500 tons of stone, 115 tons of TPE pellets (turf field) and 3.5 acres of sod to get the new athletic complex to completion.  The donations to make the $2.4 million project possible came from all avenues. Both Chatham Township and Chatham Borough paid for a good portion of the complex, and Chatham Athletic Foundation contributed an estimated…

They are zero-spill lights. That means they shine straight down. There is a grove of trees straight across from Rolling Hill Ct. The lights are further back and to the left. I'd be surprised if you could even see them.   more ›

Committee Erects Temporary Fence for Shunpike

A resident of Lake Road also asked the committee how late play would go on the field.

The Chatham Township Committee said they put up some temporary fencing around Shunpike Field in response to concerns voiced by neighboring residents that access back and forth to the field posed an inconvenience and a possible danger. Residents of Lake Road and surrounding streets have told the committee previously that access to Sunset Lake from the field is extremely easy, especially in fall and winter when the trees that act as a buffer between the field and residences are devoid of leaves. During the summer when the trees have leaves it is still possible to see and hear the fountain at Sunset Lake from the bleachers at Shunpike Field. Members of the Sunset Lake Property Owner's Association have said they are concerned not only that …

Athletic Foundation Celebrates Success

Money from the 2011 Fall Gala will help fund future projects.

The Chatham Athletic Foundation (CAF) held their 2011 Fall Gala Friday evening at the Madison Hotel in Morris Township. CAF unveiled a video of the construction at Shunpike Field by Tom Salvas. CAF provided $350,000 of the $1.05 million for Shunpike, and held a Buy-A-Brick campaign to help pay for lights on the field. The gala featured dinner, dancing, and the live auction by borough resident Bob Papa. Prizes from the auction included a Disney Hotel accommodation, a vacation home in Playa del Carmen, 10 tickets to the NY Giants-Bills game and sideline experience, an Avalon beach house for one week in August, and a wine tasting party for 16 people from Gary’s Wine and Marketplace. Fundraising from the gala will go toward CAF's projects in …

Shunpike Opening Delayed to Oct. 1

At least, committee members hope.

When the Chatham Township Committee met Thursday night, members reminded Adminstrator Tom Ciccarone of his last report on construction at Shunpike Field. "I know I said at our last meeting that it would be done by this meeting," Ciccarone said with a smile. Ciccarone did not know at that Aug. 18 meeting that an earthquake, a hurricane and near a week of rain would prevent Fredco from completing the project. "The weather isn't cooperating," Hagner said. "We weren't able to complete the remainder of the work." According to Committee Member Bill O'Connor, there is one field which needs sodding and a few other small tasks are outstanding. Ciccarone said the contractor is already starting to demobilize from the site. The opening ceremony for …

Seriously, if the ridiculously named Fredco actually said that they lost work time because of the earthquake, you should laugh in their faces and schedule a court date because they are making you look like buffoons.   more ›

Shunpike Field to Open in September

Township officials say that the project should be completed within two weeks.

Chatham Township Engineer John Ruschke said Thursday the renovations to Shunpike Field are nearly completed. "We've been almost done since May, but now we're almost almost done," Ruschke said, referring jokingly to the numerous delays to the project. "This week with the rain has certainly not been helpful," Ruschke said, but the contractor "is getting towards the end." Mayor Nicole Hagner said anyone who drives past the field can see a substantial portion of the field is laid out and she hopes the contractor, Fredco Landscaping, will begin moving their equipment off the field soon. "My expectation is that it shouldn't be more than two weeks worth of work," Ruschke said. Hagner countered, saying, "It shouldn't have been more than two weeks…

Committee Reduces Pool Rates for August

Test program would allow a price break for passes from mid-August through Labor Day.

Chatham Township residents who are either new to town or have not yet purchased a pass for Colony Pool will now be able to buy a partial pass for the remainder of the summer. During township committee's regular meeting Thursday night, the committee members voted to offer a reduced rate of $150 for township residents who want to purchase a pass from Aug. 13 through Labor Day. The change was suggested by Deputy Mayor Bob Gallop, who brought it up during his report from the pool committee meeting. He said the committee recommended the partial season pass option as a way of encouraging new residents to try the pool if they moved to the township after the pool season was underway. Gallop added that although the idea behind the program is for …

Shunpike Grass Fields Miss Completion Deadline

Broken equipment, small work crews blamed for the delay.

Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner announced Thursday that the contractor for Shunpike Field missed the July target for completing the grass fields. "We already sent Fredco a letter asking them to adhere to the completion date and try to get everything done by July 8, and clearly they didn't meet that target," Hagner said. John Ruschke, the Chatham Township engineer, was not in attendance at Thursday's meeting of the Chatham Township Committee. Hagner said she had spoken with him and that in his opinion, "the remainder of the work should not be taking this long." Hagner said Fredco was doing some work every day, but they have not had the manpower or number of crews working that the township would like to see. She also said that she had …

Why rush the sod at this point? Laying sod now is NOT ideal. Best time to sod is between mid-September and early October (2011). The project began construction in June 2010. I'm frustrated with the ineptitude of the project. Here's what Chatham Patch posted on September 10, 2010: == The contractor, Fredco, had some trouble finding fill for the field that is "acceptable," according to Rushke. This…   more ›
