With day care center and youth programs in "dire jeopardy," Salvation Army’s "Morristown Corps.," located on Spring Street, is turning to neighbors for help. "As our nation continues to endure deep economic impacts, more and more families are seeking extraordinary assistance," said Morristown Corp. spokesperson Jasmin Sacarello in a press release. The Salvation Army has a responsibility, she said, to continue providing resources which include childcare programs (for infants, toddlers, preschool, and school-age children); on-site food pantries; emergency homeless shelters, for women and children; shelters for men; and shelters for families. Major Walter L. Droz noted in the press release, "that with the advent of natural disasters and the …

Increased need, decreased donations have impacted Morristown-based charity.
If you have it to spare, The Salvation Army could use your help. That is the message coming from the Morristown-based wing of the national charity, which said increased usage of services and a drop in donations has put the organization in the position of possibly having to eliminate some services. "For the first time in the last decade, The Salvation Army finds itself struggling to assist the less fortunate," wrote Yesmy Molina, development and public relations coordinator in a press release. "A drop in the economy means that families and individuals are now using The Salvation Army services they once supported. Without additional funds, the organization is almost unable to meet the needs of those coming to its door seeking help and hope…

Along with Mendham teen, amount rises to more than $10K.
In a friendly rivalry between teens from Chatham High School and Mendham High School, Chatham came out on top. Tim Lonergan, a sophomore at Chatham High School, and Brendan Lewis, a freshman at Mendham High, collected food donations from their respective communities throughout the month of June. When collections ended Friday, the two had gathered $10,153 worth of goods. As Lonergan's efforts reaped in the donations, he raised his donation goal from $2,500 to $4,000, then to $6,500 in goods. He came close to his final goal, with a total of $6,423 in donations for the Morristown Corps of the Salvation Army. Lewis also raised his goal during the drive. He collected a total of $3,730 for the Salvation Army's Dover Corps. “A lot of people have …

Tim Lonergan helping the Morristown Corps of the Salvation Army.
As the school year comes to a close, two Morris County high school students are keeping an old rivalry alive and well—and for a good cause. Tim Lonergan, a sophomore at Chatham High School, is collecting food donations for the Morristown Corps of the Salvation Army. He is accepting donations from the entire Chatham High community. Competing with Lonergan to see who can get the most donations is Brendan Lewis, a freshman and Mendham High School. His donations will benefit the Salvation Army's Dover Corps. Donations are tracked using YouGiveGoods.com, a website based in Mendham that facilitates charity drives. Lonergan's mother, Mary, is the director of strategic partnerships for YouGiveGoods.com. The website recently launched a Food Drive …

The New Jersey Division of the Salvation Army says it's seeing a steep drop in donations—and needs your help. "Kettle donations are down. Cash donations are down. However, requests for assistance are significantly up," the Salvation Army said in a statement on the New Jersey Division's website. "And, the cost to provide services to the needy has skyrocketed in past years." The organization said donations are used throughout the whole year, but if the New Jersey Division doesn't meet its goals for the season, services will need to be reduced. "Throughout the recession The Salvation Army has been helping those in need. Not just the homeless and downtrodden but often people who have been our donors and supporters in the past," it said on …
