Police employees, with combined 65 years of service, are retiring.
The Chatham Borough Council honored on Monday two longtime police department employees, Sgt. Robert Sweetin and Parking Enforcement Officer Nicolina Balsamo, who are retiring. “You won't find two more dedicated people,” Police Chief Philip J. Crosson, Jr. said. “They never said no to any request.” Sweetin, whose retirement takes effect on April 1, started work as a dispatcher in the police department on Dec. 23, 1987, then became a patrolman on Feb. 16, 1988. He became traffic safety officer on Jan. 6, 2011. Chatham Borough Council had sweatshirts made for two municipal employees.
Chatham Borough Councilman John Holman surprised Borough Engineer Vincent J. DeNave and Traffic Safety Officer Robert Sweetin with custom-made sweatshirts to thank them for their service during Tropical Storm Sandy. "We were unable to recognize what role you [had]," Holman said during the meeting. "So we have a solution for that." The sweatshirts say "Sandy 2012" on the front left corner, and "DeNave and Sweetin Electric" on the back. DeNave and Sweetin were instrumental during and after Tropical Storm Sandy in getting the utility trucks where they needed to be. Sweetin escorted trucks around town so they would not get lost, and then roped off roads so the crews could work without passing traffic. DeNave helped inventory damage in the …

Parking, traffic could be an issue Monday afternoon as N.Y. Giant appears at Legends Gallery.
Randy Dembo, one of the owners of Legends Gallery, said he expects New York Giants fans to line up at about 3 p.m. Monday for the sold-out appearance by quarterback Eli Manning, which begins at 6:30 p.m. "With Victor Cruz, it started at 1 p.m., and [people] were here at 9:30 [a.m.]," Dembo said. For Manning, Dembo said the 250 tickets for the event, which ranged from $120 to $350, could bring 1,000 people into Chatham Borough Monday. Each ticket admits a group of people but only pays for one signature from Manning. "We're not encouraging people to bring a throng of people with them," Dembo said. Ticket prices include an item for Manning to sign, such as miniature or full-size helmets or footballs, a jersey or a photograph. Giants fans are …

21 towns in the red light camera pilot program can issue summonses again, and Chatham Borough can move forward with possible camera.
The path for Chatham Borough to participate in a statewide red light camera pilot program was made a little smoother Wednesday when the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced they lifted a suspension on issuing summonses at red light camera intersections. A participating 21 municipalities with a total 63 red light cameras can start to give summonses for motorists who drive through red lights. A further four towns with 22 red lights were not affected by the suspension. The suspension was issued on June 19 in response to complaints and a court case about the yellow light timing at the affected intersections. "The pilot program legislation specified a formula to determine the proper duration of the yellow light in a traffic…

Governing body, engineer discuss options in reducing amount of unnecessary signage.
Borough Engineer Vincent DeNave and Police Officer Robert Sweetin, the traffic safety officer, want to beautify downtown by removing unnecessary signs. Councilman Jim Collander said the Parking Task Force, a subcommittee of the Traffic Safety Committee, sought to take inventory of the borough's available parking and find ways to maximize utility by giving directional signs to the lots. "We quickly realized that our way-finding signage ... was simply inadequate," Collander said. "We then decided to expand our view and examine all the signage downtown." Sweetin and DeNave gave a photographic presentation of all the signs on both sides of Main Street between Hillside and Van Doren avenues. At each sign, the two have printed notes in the …

I just heard this morning of the passing of Nickie Balsamo- a terrible loss to all who knew her. Nickie was a true lady in every sense- kind, proud, hardworking and devoted to her family, community and co-workers. I knew her only briefly but she was a good friend and I was honored to know her. My deepest condolences to the Balsamo Family and to her family at the Chatham Borough Police Dept. …   more ›
