The Mark of a Hurricane

The best photo from the Chathams during the week.

From downed power lines to flooded basements, many residents of the Chathams felt the sting from Hurricane Irene. The large sinkhole off of Van Doren Avenue on the bridge leading to Chatham Middle School was one of the storm's most dangerous and costly impacts in town. The sinkhole cause the bridge to close, leaving all traffic to enter and exit exclusively from Main Street. It also exposed a large pipe which feeds water to borough residents. Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan called the sinkhole an "imminent danger" and said fixing quickly it was "a matter of public safety." The sinkhole is tentatively scheduled to be fixed by Tuesday. This photo of the sinkhole, taken on Sunday, Aug. 28, is Chatham Patch's Photo of the Week.

History at Home

The best photo from the Chathams during the week.

This week Chatham Patch took readers inside this home at 48 Southern Blvd. known as the Price-Baldwin Home. The current owners, Sarah Stanley and Don Davidson, are pictured inside the house, which has stood since at least 1824 and was originally built with walls of hand-split lathe boards reinforced with animal hair. This picture, taken by Antonella Rao, is Chatham Patch's Photo of the Week.

Winemaker Uncorks Local Flavor at Farmers Market

The best photo from the Chathams during the week.

New Jersey-based, Unionville Vineyard, has been making a splash at the Farmer's Market. This is the winemaker's first season setting up a booth. The vineyard, located in Ringoes, grows its own grapes and makes all of its wines right on its farm. This picture, taken by Kathryn Hough, is Chatham Patch's photo of the week because it illustrates why Chatham loves the Farmers Market and all it has to offer.

A Stop on the Journey Across America

The best photo from Chatham during the week.

This week, a documentary film crew chronicling the journey of a Memorial Cross for St. Peter's Church in New York City, near the site of the World Trade Center, stopped at the 9-11 Memorial in Chatham Borough to talk to local residents touched by the terrorist attacks nearly 10 years ago. The cross, as sculptor Jon Krawczyck explained to Dan Smith Jr., the designer of Chatham Borough's 9-11 Memorial, incorporates remains from the Twin Towers and contained a space for people to drop notes and momentos inside of the cross. This picture of Krawczyk and Smith next to the 9-11 Memorial Cross is Chatham Patch's Photo of the Week. Snow for the Holidays

The best photo from Chatham during the week.

Chatham was a winter wonderland this week after receiving nearly two feet of snow, and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. When the storm cleared on Monday, township and borough residents headed outdoors to shovel, scrape and sled. Chatham Patch sent photographers Dale Mallett and Tom Salvas into the blizzard to capture moments around town. This photo by Tom Salvas, features township residents sledding on a hill near the Chatham Township Municipal Building. It captures the spirit of the snow day and is the photo of the week.       We at Chatham Patch wish you a safe and happy new year! July Traffic

A turkey stopped cars on Shunpike Road Tuesday.

Things are just slower during the summer. I'm enjoying the decrease in car traffic, and I expect the roads to clear up even more during August. But there was a bit of unexpected traffic on Shunpike Road Tuesday, when a turkey slowly but surely made its way across the road. Cars stopped to let it cross. Not a bad summer snapshot.
