Some buildings still out, but the lines feeding into the condos are energized, mayor says.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said power lines going into the Chatham Glen condominium complex were energized Thursday afternoon. Several buildings within the complex remained without power due to repairs still outstanding, Hagner said, but all power lines within the complex were live. "JCP*L has a list of the buildings without power," Hagner said, and will continue to work on getting the power restored fully to the condos. Hagner asked residents to check with neighbors to see if power was restored. Over 30 utility poles were damaged in the corridor along Southern Boulevard and River Road, which feed power into the condos along River Road. Jay Road also had its power restored Thursday. For JCP&L's estimates for power restoration …

Multiple road closures still in place in Chatham Township, and the municipal building is closed until further notice.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said JCP&L customers could go without power for another 7 to 10 days. "Currently, JCP&L us reporting [more than] 80 percent of Morris County residents are without power," Hagner said. For trees in roadways with wires in them, JCP&L must confirm the wires are de-energized before the Department of Public Works can clear trees. Hagner said Chatham Disposal will resume normal trash collection Thursday and Friday. For a list of local charging stations, click here. The Chatham Township Municipal Building is closed until further notice. Township residents can contact officials at (973) 635-4600. JCP&L shows customers without power in the Chathams.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner confirmed "scattered power outages" in township neighborhoods due to Hurricane Sandy. Several neighborhoods, including Hagner's neighborhood along River Road, are experiencing "intermittent power," Hagner said. "We [also] have a couple trees down," Hagner said, one at the intersection of Fairmount Avenue and Meyersville Road with wires tangled in the tree, and one along Green Village Road. Residents near Fairmount Avenue and Meyersville Road should avoid the tree because the wires are still live and pose a danger to pedestrians. There is still a lane of traffic open. The Department of Public Works will try to move trees and tree branches out of roadways where possible, and Green Village Road will be …

Chatham Township officials get ready for the second hurricane in 18 months.
Fourteen months ago in August 2011, Hurricane Irene blew through Chatham and left flooding, sinkholes, power outages and trees strewn in streets, lawns and on top of homes and vehicles. Twelve months ago, almost to the day, an early season nor’easter dropped three feet of snow onto the Chathams, where the leaves were still on the trees. Chatham Township lost power completely; all but a few blocks of Chatham Borough were without power. School, sports and even Halloween trick-or-treating were all canceled as a result. Now with Hurricane Sandy protected to hit the area as early as Sunday, officials in Chatham Township see an opportunity to demonstrate the improvements they’ve made in communications and responding to community needs after the…

The policy puts a three-minute idling limit near businesses, schools and churches in the township.
The Chatham Township Committee is expected to approve a resolution Thursday reaffirming its commitment to keeping certain areas in town idle-free. The resolution is an echo of one passed in 2007 which created idle-free zones for motorists near government buildings, such as the Chatham Township Municipal Building and Chatham Township Police Department, schools and businesses, according to Mayor Nicole Hagner. "This resolution [will] move beyond New Jersey's no-idling code of three minutes," Hagner said. The resolution comes at a time when the township is preparing for another application to Sustainable Jersey. To continue as a Sustainable Jersey town, township officials must take new steps towards green living and reaffirm their commitments…

The Chatham Township Republican Committee will name one of the three candidates to fill the vacant seat at their next meeting.
The Chatham Township Committee came out of executive session Wednesday with no agreement on who should fill Kevin Tubbs' seat. "After a discussion by the committee, none of the three candidates has a majority," Mayor Nicole Hagner said. The duty of choosing one of the three candidates—Laura Ali Nonnenmacher, Joseph Contorno or Karen Swartz—to fill the vacancy left by Tubbs now falls on the Chatham Township Republican Committee, which will meet Monday evening. Tom Basta, the chairman of the Republican Committee in the township, said the meeting will be closed to the public and the press. He is not sure if one candidate needs a simple majority or a larger majority to be selected. "I'll have to check our bylaws," Basta said. "To be honest I …

Special meeting to be held Wednesday, June 6.
The Chatham Township Committee came out of executive session Thursday with the announcement they would not name a new member to fill Kevin Tubbs' empty seat. "We will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, June 6," Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said when the committee opened the meeting to the public. The committee interviewed the three candidates—Karen Swartz, Laura Ali Nonnenmacher and Joseph Contorno—in private session Thursday for about 90 minutes. Two of the candidates, Contorno and Nonnenmacher, appear on the GOP ballot for the June primary election this year. Both filed to run for a full term on the committee, though Contorno previously announced he would not campaign or seek the full term. The date of the special meeting, the …

Nicole Hagner to spend a third year as mayor, Gallop remains deputy mayor.
While the mayor and deputy mayor will not change in 2012, the Chatham Township Committee appointed Jack Conway as the interim director of Chatham Recreation at its reorganization meeting Thursday. Conway, 64, replaces Brian McNany, who was the director of the joint borough and township recreation department since 2010. A Florham Park resident, Conway previously served as the administrator of Berkeley Heights. "The plan as it was presented to me [is to] make things run as efficiently as possible," Conway said. The role of Chatham Recreation director is appointed annually. Township Administrator Tom Ciccarone did not comment on why McNany was not reappointed. Carol Nauta remains as deputy director of the department. Beginning a New Year …

Committee says they'll ask the county to collect on Green Village Road. No second pick-up scheduled.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said Thursday the Department of Public Works should finish brush collection from the late October snow storm in the most of the township by Friday afternoon. "Certainly I think eveyone can appreciate this is something we don't do on a regular basis," Hagner said. "It was an unusual and very devastating storm to the town." Some streets in town still had downed wires until recently, and the DPW could not get in to collect brush right away. However, Hagner said all streets, including "some isolated areas where we couldn't initially pick up," should be cleared within a few days. "It's possible that they may not complete everything by [Friday], but certainly by the first half of the week next week," said Tom…
