National Night Out Brings Community Together

Police used the national evening of crime and neighborhood safety awareness to educate residents about the services they provide.

Residents of Chatham Township gathered at five block parties to celebrate the 29th annual National Night Out. Mayor Nicole Hagner, Deputy Mayor Robert Gallop and Committee Member Kathy Abbott joined the Chatham Township Police Department and Chatham Emergency Squad to tour the block parties and let residents get to know their emergency responders. Residents asked police and officials about the new location of the Chatham Township gazebo and about traffic and pedestrian safety. Police also used the evening to give out safety tips and discuss the township's new community policing program. Twp. Prepares for National Night out Tuesday

Emergency responders will attend block parties to teach residents about the importance of safety.

National Night Out, now in its 29th year returns to Chatham Township Tuesday. Chatham Township residents hosted six separate block parties in 2011 and seven in 2010, attended by the Chatham Township Police Department, Green Village Fire Department, Chatham Township Fire Department and Chatham Emergency Squad. Township Residents, Police Meet at National Night Out

Police say neighbors should be familiar with each other and the authorities.

Chatham Township residents met McGruff the Crime Dog and representatives from the Chatham Township Police Department and Chatham Emergency Squad on Tuesday during the 28th National Night Out. Residents throughout the township hosted block parties and invited their friends and neighbors to reconnect with each other. Township Committee members and representatives from the Chatham Township Police Department went to visit each of the six block parties to heighten crime awareness and drug prevention. The nation-wide night of crime awareness takes place Tuesday evening.

Chatham Township Police said that six neighborhoods are hosting block parties for the 28th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday evening. Parties begin at 6 p.m. at the following locations: A map to the right shows the locations. National Night Out Returns to Chatham

The annual night of safety is meant to enhance crime prevention.

On Aug. 2, Chatham Township will participate in the 28th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out began as an effort to educate residents on how to prevent crimes and drug use in their neighborhoods and to strengthen relationships between local police and residents. On National Night Out, the Chatham Township Police encourage residents to "show your community spirit" by organizing a block party in your neighborhood.
