Vincent DeNave will receive his award at a luncheon Wednesday.
Vincent J. DeNave, the engineer for Chatham Borough, was awarded second place in Municipal Construction Management Projects by The New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers (NJSME). The award was given to DeNave for his oversight of the improvements to Memorial Park and Pool, construction of which began in December 2011 and ended in May 2012. A release from the NJSME said, "DeNave's public construction management project and approach to consensus, through collaborative community cooperation," helped make the project a success and DeNave's efforts worthy of recognition. Improvements to the park included installing a new childrens pool on the same level as the fullsized pool. The childrens pool is 40 percent larger than the previous one, and…

Green Initiatives Chair hopes rain garden will inspire residents to start their own.
The demonstration rain garden at Memorial Park and Pool in Chatham Borough officially opened to the public Saturday. Borough Councilman Len Resto said the borough was turned down for a Walmart Sustainable Jersey grant to build the rain garden. "This being Chatham, private donors came through to make the rain garden possible,” Resto said. Sprout House Nursery School donated $5,000 to make the garden possible. Z-Tech Construction Inc., Scandic Builders and Green Path Landcare donated labor and materials to build the kidney-shaped garden. Resto thanked all of them for their donations. “The rain garden is a beautiful addition to Memorial Park,” Mary Keselica, president of the Town and Country Garden Club, said. The garden, a shallow depression…

The Chatham Borough Green Initiatives Committee awarded a backyard composter to Mary Keselica, the president of the Town and Country Garden Club. Keselica is one of 232 borough residents to took the Green Challenge Pledge, a promise to live sustainably, at the 2011 Fishawack Festival. The committee's goal was to sign up at least 225 residents, or 2.5 percent of the borough's population, to the pledge, with the chance to win the composter. The names were placed in a flower vase and Keselica's name was drawn at the E-Carnival at Chatham High School on April 28. Keselica said she was "excited" at winning the composter. "It will make great compost for my gardens, including my home rain garden," she said. Volunteers from the Town and Country …

Memorial Park and Pool project represents "best of what Chatham Borough has to offer," mayor says.
Mayor Bruce Harris, Councilman James Lonergan and numerous other Chatham volunteers, officials, contractors and employees gathered Saturday to mark the official reopening of Memorial Park and Pool. The efforts made to rejuvenate the fields and the pool, Harris said, represent "the best of what Chatham Borough has to offer," because residents paired with elected and appointed officials to determine what improvements to make. The park, Lonergan said, will serve as a new home for the Chatham High School softball team, and the pool has already garnered "well above" members from previous years. As of Saturday, Lonergan said, about 170 adults and 130 children were signed up as members for the 2012 summer pool season. Harris and Lonergan thanked …

Total project, including change orders, cost $920,000.
Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce Harris, Council President James Lonergan and other local officials will be on site Saturday morning for the rededication of Memorial Park and Pool. The project, completed this week, wraps up over a week before the projected finish date of Memorial Day weekend. Borough Engineer Vincent J. DeNave said. The opening ceremony marks the end of a process which began over two years ago when the borough first began to evaluate whether substantial improvements to the pool were warranted or wanted. The Memorial Park and Pool Committee surveyed residents and made recommendations for the improvements to the council, which opted for a wider referendum vote in the November 2010. Voters opted for a tax increase in order to save…

Adult, kiddie pools open and functional after improvements.
After months of renovations that closed the fields and, for a time, the basketball courts to the public, Memorial Park and Pool is ready for summer. The adult pool was newly tiled and the pool has been filled with water. New fencing was added around the expanded pool deck area. The kiddie pool was raised to the same level as the main pool, where it used to be located at the bottom of a steep slope, and a large water feature was installed and is operational. Grass was planted on the two baseball fields, and 26 trees were planted at the field to replace the 14 trees cut down in August in preparation of the project. The basketball court was repaved and repainted. Paving was done through the borough's shared service with Summit for only a few …

Trees and water feature have been installed in the field, pool.
Memorial Park is scheduled to open well before the Memorial Day weekend, according to Council Member James Lonergan. Engineer Vincent J. DeNave said the trees along the boundary of the park have been planted, and the water feature for the kiddie pool has been installed. "It looks great. It's almost done, it'll be ready to go and for play by May 1," Lonergan said at the Chatham Borough Council meeting Monday. Grass has been put down on the two baseball fields, and with the warm weather has helped it take root. Also, 26 trees were planted at the field to replace the 14 trees cut down in August in preparation of the project. New fencing has been installed, and the deck area around the Chatham Borough Municipal Pool is complete. Tiling in the …

Engineer says pool will be finished well before opening date.
Long-awaited improvements to Memorial Park and Pool will be completed before Memorial Day, according to the borough engineer. Vincent J. DeNave said the project still has a few small touches before the project is finished, including fencing and landscaping. Council President James Lonergan, who sits on the Joint Recreation Advisory Committee, said contractors were waiting for warm weather to lay the concrete. Some of the concrete was laid last week, as the pictures attached to this article show. "Fields [are] pretty much done other than fencing and small area of grass," Lonergan said, and barring extreme winter weather the fields will be in play by May 1, "ahead of schedule." The retaining wall and kiddie pool have been installed, with the…

With a recent growth in membership, the pool is projected to operate without a deficit this year.
Construction at Memorial Park and Pool is still ongoing, but planning for the 2012 pool season is well underway. Council President James Lonergan announced to the Chatham Borough Council Monday the pool is likely to operate this year without a burden for taxpayers. "We've made a capital investment in the pool this coming year," Lonergan said, and the Pool Committee is marketing membership to the borough pool. Fees went up in 2011 for the pool, but Lonergan, working on recommendations from the Pool Committee, budgeted the 2012 fees to remain flat for those who join before the April 30 Early Bird deadline. Those who join on May 1 or after will pay an increase over 2011 membership fees. "We'll have a beautiful new pool, great location, and …
