Three candidates file for two township committee seats.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner declined to file a petition to run for a fourth term on the Chatham Township Committee. Hagner has been on the committee since 2004 and has served as township mayor since 2010. She gave birth to her first child in January. Hagner said she wishes to spend more time with her family, but intends to stay involved in the community. "I have enjoyed serving as Mayor of Chatham Township and on the Committee for the last nine years. I am proud of my many accomplishments but at the top of the long list is holding the line on taxes with no municipal tax increase for three consecutive years," Hagner said. Three others, all Republicans, did file for two available seats on the committee, including incumbent Robert …

All substations that service the township are functional again, but residents are still without power as a winter storm hits the area.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner said Wednesday several sections of town had their power restored, including: "Line crews have been working all day to get poles set on and around Snake Hill to restore power to the condo complexes on River Road. This is the largest section of town that is still out," Hagner said in a statement Wednesday. "I have no concrete estimate from JCP&L on when damage to this area will be fully repaired, but word from the crew on the ground indicates that, weather dependent, they [could] complete the job by Thursday," Hagner said. According to the outage map at the First Energy website, 1,438 customers in Chatham Township are still without power as of 10 p.m. Wednesday. Township residents whose power has not …

Substations which service power to the township require significant repairs.
Previous estimates from JCP&L of power restoration in Chatham Township were inaccurate, according to a statement from Township Mayor Nicole Hagner. "Unfortunately the numbers put up by JCP&L yesterday and published [through] Nixle were inaccurate. We are trying to get accurate numbers and locations through JCP&L," Hagner said. According to the outage map at the First Energy website, 2,680 homes in Chatham Township remain without power as of 10:30 p.m. Sunday. "Our main issue is that the Green Village substation and Traynor substation were substantially damaged, and primary lines feeding in [and] out are still being restored," Hagner said. Those two substations provide power to most of the township, and power cannot be restored until those …

Two additional light poles to be added.
The Chatham Township Committee unanimously approved a resolution awarding a contract for two more light posts at Shunpike Field. Quality Electrical Construction submitted the lowest responsible bid for the project at $59,241. "This is to award the final two light posts that we didn't get in previously," Mayor Nicole Hagner said. The Chatham Athletic Foundation donated funds to pay for the two additional light posts, and for the lights that went onto the field at its opening. Shunpike Field opened in October 2011 after 17 months of construction. The field includes turf and grass fields. Crestwood Drive Improvements Township Engineer John Ruschke said another project in the town, drainage and roadway improvements along Crestwood Drive, were …

Membership applies to children between the ages of 6 and 17 who want to participate in tennis at Colony Pool & Tennis Club.
The Chatham Township Committee voted with one abstention Thursday to amend the membership fees at Colony Pool and Tennis Club by allowing out-of-town minors to join the junior tennis teams. Under the amended ordinance which governs membership fees to Colony, children between the ages of 6 and 17 years who do not reside in the township will be able to join the club as members of the junior tennis club for $50, with an additional out-of-town fee of $50. The committee had a brief debate over the legality of allowing minors to join without their families. "Without getting into a legal box, can you grant a minor permission [to join]?" Committee Member Bailey Brower, Jr. said. "I've never heard of a junior membership that stands by itself." …

Test program would allow a price break for passes from mid-August through Labor Day.
Chatham Township residents who are either new to town or have not yet purchased a pass for Colony Pool will now be able to buy a partial pass for the remainder of the summer. During township committee's regular meeting Thursday night, the committee members voted to offer a reduced rate of $150 for township residents who want to purchase a pass from Aug. 13 through Labor Day. The change was suggested by Deputy Mayor Bob Gallop, who brought it up during his report from the pool committee meeting. He said the committee recommended the partial season pass option as a way of encouraging new residents to try the pool if they moved to the township after the pool season was underway. Gallop added that although the idea behind the program is for …

Municipal Utilities Authority presents information about new system.
The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority wants to bring single-stream recycling to Chatham Township, if the township committee feels the cost is reasonable. Kathleen Hourihan, district recycling coordinator of the MUA, made a presentation on single-stream recycling to the Chatham Township Committee on Thursday evening. Single-stream recycling, in which residents can put all their recyclables into one container without sorting, has been a topic of discussion in the township for several months. Hourihan said the MUA has been providing the township with recycling service for 24 years and would like to try single-stream recycling for the rest of 2011 and the first half of 2012, at a 10 percent cost reduction. During that time, the MUA …
