2 File for Single Borough Seat on Board of Education

The two incumbents from Chatham Township also filed.

Chatham Borough residents will have a contested election for the Board of Education this year. For the single, open seat representing the borough, incumbent Philip Franz filed a petition to run. Franz was appointed to the seat after Stephen Barna resigned in September. He is challenged by Edward DiFiglia, who announced his candidacy on Feb. 19. In Chatham Township, John Nonnenmacher and Matthew Gilfillan both filed to keep their seats on the board. No other challengers filed petitions to run, and theirs are the only seats opening in the township. The filing deadline was 4 p.m. Monday. Elections will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 16. The Board of Education President said that permitting for the work is currently in process.

Tom Belding, the president of the Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams, said that construction at Chatham High School is scheduled to begin as early as Monday. Belding said that the administration is currently pursuing all the necessary permits for the construction project. "We anticipate this will be completed by the end of [the] week," Belding wrote via email Tuesday. He went on to say that the permits could take until Monday at the latest to get approved. The project was awarded to Stone Creek, Inc., a Lodi, NJ-based company, for $1,622,160. The board unanimously approved the project at the June 27 meeting. BOE Saves Additional State Aid for 2012-13 Budget

Assistant Superintendent and Business Administrator say they know several districts taking a similar path.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams took no action on an additional $517,006 in state aid awarded last week at their Monday night meeting. Board Member Matthew Gilfillan, the head of the Facilities and Finance Committee, along with Assistant Superintendent Michael LaSusa and new Business Administrator Peter Daquila, said that it would be better to put the additional aid toward the 2012-13 budget, since there was no guarantee of how much state aid the district could get next year. Gilfillan said that the Facilities and Finance Committee met just before the 7:30 p.m. board meeting and discussed "three different avenues" for using the money. The first option was to put the money toward the operation of the district, …

BOE Unanimously Approves Parking Lot Expansion

Members cite safety and growing population as primary reasons for adding 82 spaces to the lot.

The Board of Education unanimously voted to approve a capital project at Chatham High School which will add four more classrooms and an additional alternative of adding an 82-spot parking lot expansion. The vote came after a presentation from Board Member Matthew Gilfillan, of the finance/facilities committee, and after an opportunity for public comments. Board members also explained their votes to those in attendance. According to Gilfillan's presentation, the expansion of the parking lot will also include some concessions to address residents' concerns. He said the board will install a pedestrian path along Longwood Avenue to make it easier for students coming from that direction to approach the school through the fields in the back …
