Luminaria Kits For Sale through Rotary Club

A Chatham tradition returns again this year.

Remember the kits of candles along your neighbor's walkway last Christmas Eve? You too can take part in the tradition this year. Each Christmas the Rotary Club of Chatham, Millburn and Short Hills provides kits of 10 candles, 10 paper bags and cat litter to weigh the bags down. They are called luminaria, and the cost of each kit—$10—helps support local and worldwide Rotary projects. The luminaria line the streets of Chatham each Christmas Eve, creating a magical site. "It's wonderful!" said Cathy Hackett, a Chatham resident who served as the luminaria block captain for Jackson Avenue in 2010. "It's so beautiful when you look down the street." It's Not Too Late to Get Your Luminaria

The Rotary Club made 100 kits Monday in preparation for Christmas Eve.

Luminarias are now available from the Rotary Club of Chatham, Millburn and Short Hills. Jim Linehan of the Rotary Club said while luminaries have been delivered already, procrastinators can still order and pick up kits through Dec. 24. Each kit contains 12 bags, 12 candles and a bag of kitty litter to weigh down the bags and keep them from tipping over or blowing away. Total cost per kit is $10. The kits also contain an added bonus—a $5 coupon from ShopRite. The net proceeds benefit local Parent Teacher Organizations within the School District of the Chathams, as well as Rotary fundraisers including scholarship programs, Polio Plus, the Rotary Park in Chatham and classroom supplies such as Smartboards. Late-comers can contact the Rotary Club to order — and pick up — kits up until Christmas Eve.
