Police seek information in ongoing investigation.
The Morris County K9 Unit was called in to track down a burglar Thursday night after residents of a River Road home in Chatham Township found their home burgled and ransacked. Residents of the home returned at about 10 p.m. and heard a noise inside, police said. When they entered the house they said they discovered the master bedroom had been ransacked. The residents also found an unknown amount of jewelry missing from the residence. Chatham Township police responded to the scene, along with the county's Criminal Investigation Section and the K9 Unit, according to police. Police warn residents to be cautious and lock their cars.
Chatham Township Police said several residents reported their cars stolen or witnessed attempts to steal their cars within recent weeks. Lt. Maureen Kazaba said police believe the thieves are targeting cars that use a proximity-key fobs to start, and warned residents to remove key fobs and lock their cars each night and make sure the car does not have a valet key in the glove compartment. "It was learned that some dealerships place valet keys in the vehicle’s document envelope in the glove compartment," Kazaba said. She added the cars' owners are not always aware this key is in the car. After more than 25 years with the township police department, Steven Hennelly takes over as chief.
Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner administered the oath of office Thursday night to Steven Hennelly, who was officially sworn in as the new chief of the Chatham Township Police Department. The Chatham Township Committee unanimously voted Hennelly as the new chief at their Thursday, Jan. 31, meeting, and he took over the duties of chief the next day. Hennelly replaces Chief John Paton, who retired as of Thursday after 34 years with the Chatham Township Police Department, including four years as chief. The committee also approved two resolutions approving new lieutenants.
