Chatham Borough Councilmen Vicki Fife and Len Resto plan to submit Memorial Park to New Jersey's Great Places program.
Two members of the Chatham Borough Council have big plans for Memorial Park and Pool. Councilmen Vicki Fife and Len Resto are compiling an application to get the entire Memorial Park complex—from the municipal pool to the softball fields, from the 9/11 Memorial to the Library of the Chathams—named as a Great Public Space in New Jersey. Fife said, "For all the right reasons we think the whole complex, with the 9/11 Memorial and the Library [of the Chathams] and the rain garden and all of those things, make it this 'perfect storm' space right in the middle of Chatham Borough." Elements of the complex, including the 9/11 Memorial and the rain garden, were made possible through donations volunteer efforts and free labor. Others, such as the …

This year, children who participate in the Summer Reading Club at the Library of the Chathams created original bookmarks promoting reading. The bookmarks are now on display at the library in the main foyer, and members of the public are invited to vote on their favorite one. "People are really getting into it," Library Director Diane O'Brien said. "I didn't think they'd take it so seriously." The bookmarks have a unique label, and people who visit the library can submit secret ballots for their favorite bookmark in each age group. Voting remains open until Saturday, July 21.

Chatham kids can earn prizes by reading as many books as possible.
The Summer Reading Club is in full swing at the Library of the Chathams. Each summer the library offers the chance for children ages 12 and under to earn prizes by reading as many books as possible. Once they finish a book, children discuss them with a student volunteer. Readers roll dice to answer a question, such as "What was the most exciting part of the book?" Readers can earn between two and 20 points for each book, depending on its length. As they earn points, they can choose a prize from the treasure chest. Since children need not read independently to participate, even those who read picture books or whose parents read to them may enroll. Kids can also attend reading club meetings throughout the summer. The theme for this year's …

To the Editor: The Board of the Friends of the Library of the Chathams would like to thank all who made our 2012 Book Sale such a resounding success. A big thank you goes to the Woman’s Club of Chatham for allowing us to use their room. We would like to thank the local residents who donated over 30,000 thousand books and media. Chatham Moving and Storage set up a ramp which made it easier for us to bring the books out of the storage room. The Chatham Courier provided great news coverage, the Dairymen at ShopRite and Kings supplied us with numerous OJ boxes and the liquor stores contributed and endless supply of boxes as well. The Chatham High School Key Club and National Honor Society along with many other volunteers carried many heavy …
