Ann Frommer co-authored a book about a soldier in World War II.
The Library of the Chathams often hosts authors as guest speakers, but it's not every day those authors are residents of the towns the library serves. Ann Frommer, a longtime resident of Chatham, will speak at the library at 7 p.m. Thursday about her first novel, "Tailgunner," which she co-authored with a former schoolmate, Victor Merkel. After Frommer read Merkel's book "Misery Mountain," she reached out to her old schoolmate in Arizona and the two rekindled their friendship. Eventually Merkel asked Frommer to co-author a book with him, the end result of which will be available for sail at Frommer's lecture Thursday. All patrons of the library can use the new program, Zinio.
The Library of the Chathams recently launched a new program that allows patrons to download and view their favorite magazines online. It's all made possibly by Zinio, an online magazine service. Unlike digital book rentals from the library, which only one patron can use at a time, Zinio allows multiple users to download and view the same magazine at the same time, without holds or checkout periods. Jay Chatterjee, head of reference at the Library of the Chathams, said, "patrons can download as many magazines as they like" using Zinio. Also, "some magazines have interactive elements such as audio and video." Zinio is compatible with the most commonly used web browsers, including Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer 9. Council President Len Resto will lead a panel discussion on the water crisis following the movie.
Chatham Borough's Green Team has planned their latest event, part of the Eco Film and Discussion Series, all around water. The event will feature a screening of the film "Flow: For Love of Water," a documentary which explores the world water crisis in the 21st century. Water is at the essence of life, and its presence on Earth is what makes all life possible. Using academic, scientific and political testimonies and evidence, this film, directed by Irena Salina, investigates the pattern of the dwindling resources of potable water and the reasons behind this pattern. The sale is the Friends of the Library's biggest fundraiser of the year.
The annual book sale at the Library of the Chathams is on now through Friday. The sale opened Saturday after books, CDs, VHSs and DVDs were collected for weeks. Now the Friends of the Library are holding a bag sale: Bags of books are $5, and bags of CDs and DVDs are $20. Each year I go to this sale and while I look around for myself (my book collection is shockingly devoid of Homer and Virgil), I also look for friends—well, one in particular. I have a friend working in this country who was born and raised abroad, as was her husband. She told me once she had no idea what books she should buy for her two young children. The books we read as young children stay with us, and they become a way to bond with other children in school and in other …

The book sale is the library's single biggest fundraiser of the year.
Friends of the Library of the Chathams are currently collecting donations for their Annual Book Sale, to be held in March. Each year the Friends collect books, DVDs, VHSs, CDs, audio cassettes and numerous other items for the book sale. Estimates in former years have been up to 50,000 items donated for the sale, the Friends' largest fundraiser of the year. Residents leave bags, boxes and piles of their books in the hallway from the rear parking lot into the library all year long, even though collections for the book sale only begin in January. The Friends collect the books and bring them downstairs, where they are sorted and readied for sale. Typically it takes 40 volunteer hours for each week of the collection to keep on top of the …

While sitting at my desk working Tuesday, something perfectly ordinary happened: My phone started buzzing. This is not unusual. I typically get at least 150 emails per day, up to a dozen phone calls and between 20 and 30 text messages, most from the Chatham organizations I follow on Twitter. These organizations include Chatham High School, Chatham Borough, the Chatham Township Police Department and the Library of the Chathams. It was a tweet from the library that made my phone buzz in this particular instance. The Library of the Chathams is currently hosting an art show featuring the work of Kamil Kubik, a modern-day impressionist painter. Kubik was born in Czechoslovakia and studied in Prague, London, Sydney, San Francisco and New York. His work features scenes from these cities, as well as Paris and Washington, D.C. and is included in the collections of, among others, President George Bush, President Gerald Ford, Donald Trump, Gov. Thoams Kean and Prince Ranier of Monaco. The work currently on display at the library includes paintings of the White House, the New York Stock Exchange, Central Park, scenes from lower Manhattan including Wall Street and the St. Patrick's Day and World Series Championship parades. Navigating the world of e-books can confuse some patrons of the Library of the Chathams, especially when those books are library books which you can download directly to your e-reader ... and which will disappear once your loan expires. To help patrons learn how to use their Kindles to rent library books, the library will host Mike Skarra, a teacher at the Adult School of Madison, the Chathams and Florham Park as he leads a workshop specifically for Kindle users.
