Redistricting Gives GOP Hope in Dem-Heavy District 27

Republican Assembly candidates have renewed confidence heading into November election.

Some say Republicans don't have a chance of winning a general election in Democrat-heavy District 27, but former Chatham Township member Laura Ali  and East Hanover firefighter Angelo Tedesco have a different view. Following their victory in Tuesday's GOP primary over candidate Tayfun Selen, the two are taking on longtime Democratic General Assembly members John McKeon and Mila Jasey in the Nov. 5 general election. Unofficial tallies from the Morris County Clerk's Office show Tedesco with 45 percent of the primary vote, Ali with 43 percent and Selen with a little more than 13 percent. The Essex County Clerk's Office reports a similar result from Tuesday's vote: Both Tedesco and Ali garnered about 46 percent of the vote, with Selen's 8 …

BTW, if they want to cut spending they should switch parties - since 1980, the GOP has spent more while in power than all other parties combined in the history of the U.S. Reagan's fiscal policies helped to destroy the middle class (not to mention that he had to raise taxes 19 times to compensate for his poor first term policies) and NO ONE ever spend more than George Bush the 2nd. There's …   more ›

Hagner, Holtzman Endorsed by Independent Businesses

The candidates for State Assembly say they will promote small business growth in Trenton if elected.

Nicole Hagner, the mayor of Chatham Township, and District 27 General Assembly runningmate Lee Holtzman announced that they were endorsed by the New Jersey branch of the National Federation of Independent Business (NIFB). The two Republican candidates for State Assembly said the endorsement is another indication that the tax-hiking policies of their Democratic opponents will not encourage job creation and small business in the Garden State. "John McKeon has become the go-to guy whenever Trenton politicians need someone to champion a tax increase,” Hagner said. “Not only has he voted for more than $10 billion worth of tax increases over the past decade on sales, income and small businesses, he personally sponsored laws to increase taxes on …

Hagner, Holtzman Pledge Not to Raise Gas Prices

The GOP state assembly candidates for the 27th district said gas increases take millions from taxpayers.

Nicole Hagner and Lee Holtzman, the GOP candidates for the State Assembly from the 27th district, pledged not to raise New Jersey gasoline prices if elected and ask their Democratic opponents to pledge the same. Hagner, the mayor of Chatham Township, said, “New Jersey cannot afford to take hundreds of millions of dollars from our already overburdened homeowners and businesses and give it to Trenton politicians.” According to a press release from the two candidates, Democrats have tried to raise the price of gas at least three times since 2008. Holtzman, an attorney from Livingston, said the Democratic incumbents in the assembly will likely keep pushing for higher taxes. “We will not increase the financial burden on our residents by …

Hagner, Holtzman Want Employee Pay-Out Reform

The two GOP candidates held a press conference Thursday where they called for change in Trenton.

At a press conference at Chatham Township's municipal building Thursday, Chatham Township Mayor Nicole Hagner and Lee Holtzman, the two GOP candidates for the General Assembly representing the 27th District, blasted the current practice of huge pay outs of accumulated sick and vacation time for municipal employees. Citing a recent Bloomberg News report, the candidates said the Garden State was facing hundreds of millions of dollars in payments to government workers for unused sick time and other leave. The two said if elected to Trenton they would support limits on payouts for unused sick days and vacation days. Hagner said Chatham Township has already limited cash payments for unused vacation days and capping unused sick leave days to …

Hagner: State Employee Contracts a 'Burden' on Taxpayers

The State Assembly candidate and her runningmate will discuss state employee retirement contracts and vacation buyouts.

Nicole Hagner, the 27th District's Republican candidate for the General Assembly, and runningmate Lee Holtzman announced they will hold a press conference to discuss state employee contracts, which cost "millions of dollars each year for unused vacation and sick days," according to a statement released Wednesday. "Municipal employees already receive generous pensions and health benefits upon retirement. It is a burden to ask cash-strapped taxpayers to cough up thousands more for each employee who has accumulated vacation time and unused sick days as an added going away bonus upon retirement,” Hagner said. Holtzman, a Livingston resident, said, "In the past year, New Jersey taxpayers doled out at least $43 million for unused sick and …
