Cougars' Title Hopes Dashed in Extra Innings

Two solo-home runs lead to end of Chatham's season.

The Chatham High softball team’s season ended on Tuesday in heartbreaking fashion, as the Cougars saw a walk-off home run in the ninth inning lead to a tough 2-1 loss to Sparta in a Group III semifinal round matchup in Edison. After building a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning, Chatham starting pitcher Amanda Fazio, who allowed just five hits while striking out nine, allowed two solo-home runs, one tying the game in the seventh and the other to give Sparta the hard fought win. “We came into this game feeling like we had nothing to lose, and we were just going to enjoy the experience and have a lot of fun,” Chatham head coach Alexis Davies said. “But I just told [the team], it’s really hard not to hurt after a loss like that, after being three …

Leto, McCutcheon Lead Girls Lacrosse to Title

The girls lacrosse team is once again the Group II champion.

With only one senior getting regular playing time, this could have been a rebuilding year for the Chatham High School girls lacrosse team. Instead, it's a championship one. Chatham defeated Rumson-Fair Haven at Robbinsville High School on Thursday, 16-8, to win the Group II title for the second year in a row. "I was concerned about how young we were coming into the season," Chatham head coach Deb Marriott said. "The girls just worked so hard. The main thing is they wanted it like nothing else." It didn't hurt that the one senior on the field was Cat McCutcheon, who scored two goals in the Group II final. "I stepped up as a senior to be a leader, but everyone on the field is a leader," McCutcheon said. "Everyone is coming up big." Chatham …

Slow Start Hampers Chatham in Softball Final

Cougars unable to overcome early five-run deficit as Pequannock wins third straight county title.

The Chatham High School softball team lost to Pequannock 5-1 Thursday night in the Morris County Tournament championship at Roxbury. Chatham fell behind early as starting pitcher Amanda Fazio and company saw the Panthers, winners of the past three Morris County tournaments, capitalize on Chatham fielding miscues and scored  five runs in the first two innings. “We practice all week on playing deep, because we felt like we got beat by the long ball the last game,” Chatham head coach Alexis Davies said. “And then they got a couple of little short balls in. I think our adrenaline was running a little bit too high and we bobbled them and gave them an extra base here and there.” Trailing 5-0, the Cougar offense struggled to get going against …

Defense Falters as Chatham Falls in County Final

Mendham hangs on, despite Cougars' late surge.

The Chatham High School girls lacrosse team lost to Mendham High, 15-11, in the Morris County Tournament championship Wednesday at Roxbury High.   The Cougars’ defense struggled to stop Mendham’s high-powered offense all night, most notably Mendham junior Aly Messinger, who scorched Chatham for a game-high seven goals, and Nicole Graziano, who netted three. Those struggles led to two Mendham scoring runs, as Chatham allowed a 5-0 run in the first half, followed by a 4-0 run in the second. “They did not play a good game defensively at all,” Chatham head coach Deb Marriott said. “In the first half, and the first part of the second half, we didn’t pressure the ball out the way we were supposed to. We also didn’t send the help in the second …
