Outages Dwindle—Slowly—in Chatham Borough

Officials release safety tips for the nor'easter that hit the area.

Chatham Borough Police released several safety tips for residents as the nor'easter began to hit the area. Those with residents are asked to remove any extension cords from generators that may cross streets to neighboring homes. "In the event there is sufficient snow to require snow plows to clear the streets, these extension cords could be dangerous to workers and residents," a statement on Kevin O'Shea of the Chatham Borough Police Department reads. Police continue to urge residents to assume any downed wire is energized and not to go near them. In anticipation of the nor'easter, brush pickup in Chatham Borough was suspended until Thursday. Borough Moves to County Dispatch Service

All emergency calls in Chatham Borough will now be handled through the county.

Borough Police are waiting Monday for the moment when all incoming emergency telephone calls will be transferred to the Morris County Dispatch System in Parsippany. “Our 911 calls are all going up there,” said Public Information Officer Kevin O’Shea, “but we’re still waiting for Verizon to transfer the other calls.” The transfer is expected to be complete at any moment, once Verizon finishes programming the calls to go to the county’s dispatch center. After the transfer is complete, there will no longer be a dispatcher stationed at the Police Department in the basement of the Borough Municipal Building. The new reception window will be located across from the elevators in the basement of the Borough Municipal Building, according to Borough…

Crime Report Shows Rise In Larceny, Other Crimes

Borough saw rise in violent crimes; domestic violence spiked in township.

Chatham Township saw a rise in domestic violence while more violent crimes were reported in the borough in 2009, according to the Uniform Crime Report released Thursday by the New Jersey State Police. The borough and township both saw increases in the crime index total, mainly propelled by a substantial rise in larceny incidents. Larceny rose from 26 incidents in 2008 to 43 in 2009 in the borough, and from 20 to 44 in the township. Overall, Morris County saw drops in both violent and non-violent crime from 2008 to 2009, according to the report. The report shows that the total crime index in Morris County fell from 6,220 incidents to 5,980, a decrease of 3.9 percent. Within those numbers, violent crime fell from 430 incidents to 387, a …
