Holman, Resto Win Second Council Terms

The two incumbents defeated Democrat Michael Yodice by nearly 900 votes each.

Sitting Councilmen Len Resto and John Holman were elected to serve second terms representing the residents of Chatham Borough Tuesday. Resto said he was "honored to be once again serve the people of Chatham." He earned the most votes out of the three candidates, winning 2,641 votes total. Councilman John Holman, who earned 2,602 votes Tuesday, said he hardly paid attention to the local election during the day. Instead, he said, he was focused on trying to get power restored to his neighborhood. "I spent the afternoon riding around with Officer Robert Sweetin as the houses came back on," Holman said. As of Tuesday evening, power was restored to several homes in Holman's neighborhood—but not yet to his own home. Two seats on the council were…

What's On at the Chatham Borough Farmers Market

Farmers Market Closes Up Shop for the Season

The Chatham Borough Farmers Market ends another year.

This Saturday marks the end of the Chatham Borough Farmers Market’s fifth season. After 22 weeks, a hurricane and an October snowstorm, customers have to say goodbye to this community staple for the year. Over the past five years, the market has continuously improved and grown. In 2007, when the market opened, it had only eight regular vendors. Now, only five years later, and the market rotates 32 vendors in and out of the market each week. “We had a lot of unique vendors come that originally put in to come only once or twice a month that asked to come more often,” said Council Member John Holman, the Farmers Market Council liaison, said. “We had [a wine vendor] for the first time this year at the Farmers Market. I believe she sold out …

No Second Brush Pick-Up for Chatham Borough

A second brush pick-up, along with leaf pick-up and preparing for winter, is impossible to do within the DPW budget, officials said.

The Chatham Borough Council decided not to permit a second brush pick-up through town in order to catch up on leaf pick-up and keep the budget under control. Bob Venezia, the head of the borough's Department of Public Works (DPW), said overtime and outside contractors were authorized after the early winter storm to help pick up branches and trees which came down. As of Monday evening, he said the DPW had picked up brush from over half of the borough. "I feel confident that we can be done by the end of this week," Venezia said, but he added calls have already come in asking after leaf pick-up and a second brush pick-up. The department's efforts have focused on brush pick-up since the storm. Of the department's 16 employees, 14 have been …

Irene Costs to Borough Estimated at $117,497

Amount could go higher, depending on the final expense of the Days Creek sinkhole repair.

Chatham Borough Council members had numerous commendations for the employees and volunteers who worked throughout Hurricane Irene at Monday night's meeting. Administrator Robert Falzarano said estimates for overtime salaries, fuel, equipment, tree removal and road repair currently add up to $117,497. Approximately $35,000 of that amount is for the repair to the sinkhole over Days Creek off of Van Doren Avenue, which exposed a 14-inch water supply pipe and threatened the borough's water supply. This number, Falzarano said, is still "tentative" and could increase. "Our engineer, Vince DeNave, still has to firm up the cost for the repair to the culvert at [the bridge] and the water main shoring up," Falzarano said. "There was an extensive …
