Twenty classrooms get air conditioning in time for the 2012-13 school year.
As Chatham Middle School (CMS) students head back into the classrooms, there will be one immediate change they are sure to notice. Over the summer, 20 classrooms were outfitted with air conditioning for the first time, thanks to a $12,000 donation from the CMS Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). These were the last classrooms in the school not to have air conditioning. "That is an enormous upgrade, because there were the haves and have-nots," Principal Robert Accardi said. "It's been my personal crusade. The PTO's been terrific in making that possible. ... It's really going to help provide an optimal learning environment for students." World Language supervisor chosen from among 70 candidates, assistant superintendent said.
The Board of Education approved Jill Gihorski as the new principal of Chatham Middle School Monday by a vote of 8-0, with Board Member John Nonnenmacher the only absent member. Assistant Superintendent Michael LaSusa said Gihorski was chosen from "about 70 candidates" for the role. The selection process included interviews with LaSusa and Personnel Director Deb Becker; an interview by a committee from Chatham Middle School which included one student, two teachers, two supervisors, the outgoing and incoming PTO presidents of the middle school and two district principals, including Chatham High School Principal Darren Groh; and an interview by the Personnel Committee. Jill Gihorski will serve in the position from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2013.
The Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday with one item on the agenda: to vote on the approval of Jill Gihorski as the new principal of Chatham Middle School (CMS). According to the agenda, Gihorski will serve as CMS principal through June 30, 2013. She will be paid $142,000. Gihorski currently serves as the supervisor for World Languages in the district, a role she will have to resign before she begins as the CMS principal on Jan. 1, 2013. Board of Education President Tom Belding declined to comment on Gihorski's appointment.
