Accused murderer Jose Feliciano's confession to prosecutors can be used as evidence against him.
Jose Feliciano's confession to Capt. Jeffrey Paul of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office can be used against him at trial, a judge ruled Thursday. The Hon. Thomas V. Manahan, sitting in Morristown, submitted a written decision in the hearing Thursday morning in which he said, "The interrogations were not, in this court’s view, overbearing or overreaching and did not create the compelling atmosphere which falls under the protection of Miranda." Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi said, “We are obviously satisfied with the Court’s decision and now look forward to trying this case before a jury as quickly as is possible.” Feliciano is accused of stabbing the Rev. Edward Hinds to death in the rectory of St. Patrick Church, where Hinds …

The court appearance has been moved to Feb. 7.
Accused murderer Jose Feliciano's court date has been moved from Tuesday to Feb. 7. The Hon. Thomas V. Manahan, sitting in Morristown, had a full calendar of items on Tuesday and moved the hearings in Feliciano's case to next week. Feliciano is accused of killing the Rev. Edward Hinds, the pastor of St. Patrick Church, in October 2009. Hinds was found stabbed when he failed to show up to morning Mass. Manahan is scheduled to hear arguments from prosecutor John McNamara and public defender Neill Hamilton on whether Feliciano's "prior bad acts" and an alleged a confession made by Feliciano to police may be used at trial. Hamilton stated in an October appearance before Judge Manahan that his client would pursue an insanity defense. Results …

Jose Feliciano’s mental capacity called into question.
Accused murderer Jose Feliciano's attorney Neill Hamilton said in a status hearing before Judge David Ironson Wednesday morning that a psychiatric examination for his client was still pending. Hamilton has not heard whether the cost of the exam has been approved by the state Office of the Public Defender. Hamilton also discussed legal motions in the case, including a motion to suppress cellular phone records and a motion that Feliciano's Miranda rights were violated. Hamilton alleged that Feliciano was taking Xanax and was in a psychiatric ward at the time he was questioned by investigators from the Morris County Prosecutors Office. Assistant Prosecutor David Bruno said that Feliciano was "not in the psychiatric ward for (mental) …

Jose Feliciano appeared in state Superior Court in Morristown this morning.
MORRISTOWN — The former janitor at St. Patrick's Church accused of murdering the church's former pastor, the Rev. Edward Hinds, pleaded not guilty to six charges this morning in state Superior Court. "Not guilty," said Feliciano's attorney, Morris County Public Defender Neill Hamilton, when Judge Thomas V. Manahan asked for Feliciano's plea during arraignment proceedings at the Morris County Courthouse. Feliciano has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of unlawful weapon possession, one count of third-degree robbery and one count of hindering one's own apprehension. The Rev. Robert Mitchell began his new job this week.
The Rev. Robert Mitchell began his first day of work as the pastor of St. Patrick's Church on Wednesday without much fanfare. And for Mitchell, who exudes humility, that was the perfect way to start. "It was a nice snowy morning with six people at church to greet me," Mitchell said. "It was a nice way to break in." Mitchell became the parish's first full-time pastor since former Rev. Edward Hinds was murdered in late October inside the church building. The church's former janitor, Jose Feliciano, has been charged with murder in connection with Hinds' death. Mitchell, who comes to St. Patrick's after 12 years at St. Jude Parish in Budd Lake, said he has already seen that church members "live with the loss of a good man." "He did a lot of …
