Do Your Christmas Shopping, Help Chatham Moms

Dawn Paskalides hosts a shopping event with women-owned businesses as a fundraiser to help local single moms in need.

Dawn Paskalides and the Women Business Owners of Chatham (WBOC) offer a chance for Chathamites of all ages to do their Christmas shopping and help out their neighbors at the same time. Twenty Chatham women with their own businesses will gather in Paskalides' home at 3 Karlin Dr. in the township from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday. A percentage of proceeds from the sale will go to benefit single mothers in need in the Chathams, and to fund a $1,000 Girl EmPOWERment scholarship, which will go to a graduating senior from Chatham High School. Paskalides has held the event in her home for several years. "To date, 33 single moms in Chatham have been helped," she said, to the tune of $35,000. The event will also feature wine and cheese, and a …

VIDEO: Girl Power Goes Deep in Chatham

GIRL emPOWERed event raised enough money for college scholarships and SageGirl.org.

How do you get over 200 people to show up at school on a Saturday? That's easy: Girl power. Lafayette Avenue School was the home of the first GIRL emPOWERed fundraising event Saturday. The event was conceived and organized by Chatham Township resident Dawn Paskalides, who worked with schools, local boards, businesses, vendors and police to organize a day full of girl power. While the nominal beneficiary of the event was the nonprofit SageGirl.org, many girls who attended the event also walked away as winners. Gianna Strand, the president of the Chatham High School Key Club, was awarded with a $1,000 college scholarship funded by the GIRL emPOWERed event. She read part of her essay to the crowd before Emily Bent, the executive director of …

Chatham Woman Brings On the Girl Power

From shopping to flash dances, one woman hopes to raise $10,000 for girl empowerment Saturday ... with a little help.

If you believe in girl power, Chatham Township resident Dawn Paskalides wants you. Paskalides has spent the last seven months planning a "GIRL emPOWERed" event which takes place Saturday at Lafayette Avenue School. The day is inspired, in part, by the Girls on the Run program. "It's a very powerful program, Paskalides said. "[It's] about being empowered, having a voice and making positive choices." From television and magazines to the Internet and their friends, it can be tough to be an adolescent girl. Girls on the Run provides a place for girls to be active and positive forces for themselves and their peers. There is, however, one shortcoming. "I didn't like the fact that there's only 24 spaces in Girls on the Run," Paskalides said. If …

What's On at the Chatham Borough Farmers Market

Mangia! Brings Fresh Bread to Farmer's Market ... And to Your Car

Delivery now a feature of Mangia's Farmers Market stand.

Mangia!, a stand serving fresh bread, is one of the many stands at the Chatham Borough Farmer’s Market. Dawn Paskalides freshly makes stuffed breads each day that were taught to her at a young age by her grandmother. “The breads can be purchased and kept in the freezer for up to three months and take 40 minutes in the oven to heat,” Paskalides said about preparing the food. Paskalides, who has four children and used to be an elementary school principal, says she runs the stand for a variety of reasons. “The most important reasons,” she said, “are because I love talking to people and because I absolutely love cooking.” With the weather turning cold and snow expected Friday night and Saturday morning, Paskalides also offers delivery right to…
