9-11 Documentary Features Chatham Residents, Memorial

A film crew delivering a 9-11 Memorial Cross to St. Peter's Church in New York City made a stop in Chatham Wednesday.

When sculptor and Morris County native Jon Krawczyk came home this week, he did not come alone. Kevin Kato and Jason Smith, respectively a writer and film director, joined Krawczyk on his cross-country road trip from his Malibu, Calif.,  studio to New York City. They joined him because of a very special piece of art that Krawczyk had in tow. Krawczyk, who grew up in Boonton, was commissioned to create a 9-11 Memorial Cross for St. Peter's Church in New York City, which faces the site of the World Trade Center and was damaged in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Two steel beams forming a cross were found amid the wreckage of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks. Named the World Trade Center Cross or the Ground Zero …

Chatham Runners Drive to Feed Homeless

Students describe looking for homeless on city streets as 'eye-opening.'

The auditorium at Stanley Congregational Church was filled on Friday with busy hands, long tables, and the sound of crinkling brown paper bags as the varsity men's and women's cross country teams worked to assemble 300 lunches for the homeless. The teams, along with Stanley Church, are partnered with Bridges, a community service non-profit group based in Summit, through the efforts of Lucy Malatesta. This is the second year of the runners' involvement in the program and, given its success, will not be the last. The head coach of the men's cross country team, Pat Barry, said more than the homeless benefited from the meals. "It gets [the students] involved in their community and it makes them see beyond their community as well. To help out …

Cougars Move on to Meet of Champions

Junior Tara Hanley finishes second in Group II with impressive performance while Anthony Malatesta takes 10th for boys

When the elite runners from around the Garden State return to Holmdel Park next Saturday, Chatham junior Tara Hanley will be in the mix of athletes hoping to end the year with a medal around their necks from the Meet of Champions.  Even after finishing in second in all of Group II today, Hanley said she had still hoped to head into the next round of meets as the group champion, but was happy to be moving on at all. "I'm going to the Meet of Champions so I'm just thrilled about that ultimately," she said. "The goal was to win, but the second goal was to come in second and move on to the next round." Now, Hanley said she wants to finish in the top 10 in all the state. "That's a huge goal, but I'm pretty motivated to do it," she said. …

Chatham Places Well Among Morris County's Best

Chatham places two runners in the top twenty.

The Chatham cross country teams had a good showing at the Morris County Championships on Oct. 30.  Two of their runners placed with in the top twenty for individual times between the boys and girls teams. The men's team came in 7th out of 24 teams in the meet and respectfully demonstrated great running as one unit. "Between all three teams, JV, varsity, and freshman, we've been trying to break in to the top three. We haven't done that thus far, but it was a goal for us coming into today," said head coach Pat Barry. "We're trying to get our top runner, Anthony Malatesta into the top ten today and above all have a good team race." Men's Cross Country Team Eyes Repeated Success

After winning the division in 2009, the 2010 team has its sights set on the state sectional meet.

Coming off a very strong season, the Chatham men's cross country team is looking to repeat that success in 2010. "We feel like we have a strong team, we feel like we're going to have a good season," said head coach Patrick Barry. "(Last year) we won the Independence Division and we were in the state sectional meet, (we finished in) second place." The team didn't lose many seniors from last year's division championship squad, so there's no reason to think that they will falter this season. However, if the Cougars are to make noise in 2010, three seniors in particular must roar. "We lost two key seniors from last year," Barry said. "The (current) seniors are Charlie Baker, Michael Kaiser and Steven Bangs." Barry has made the goals for the …
