Main Street, Madison Avenue Work May Affect Traffic

PSE&G plans to replace gas mains in Madison, and the utility is asking motorists to slow down as they approach the nighttime construction work.

Crews replacing gas mains on sections of Main Street and Madison Avenue in Madison could affect traffic when the nighttime construction begins in August, Public Service Electric & Gas announced Monday. Construction is scheduled to begin around Aug. 13 and continue until the project is completed around Oct. 26. The utility said it is "replacing gas mains and services in Madison to ensure safe, reliable utility service for area residents and business owners." "This project is part of PSE&G’s annual gas main and service replacement, which will help strengthen the distribution system," a news release from the company said. The first phase will focus on Main Street between Greenwood Avenue and Green Village Road, and is expected to take …

GWB Traffic Nightmare Could Begin Friday, Last All Summer

State, Port Authority warn of "significant" eastbound delays because of Cross Bronx bridge repairs, urge drivers to use mass transit, and to expect bus delays into the city through Labor Day.

This summer could be remembered as a traffic hell by the millions of people who travel east over the George Washington Bridge thanks to the closure of a lane on the oft-congested Cross Bronx Expressway from this Friday through Labor Day. The lane closure will take place on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, which spans the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx. The bridge is already a chokepoint, as traffic from both levels of the GWB merge onto one roadway. Several other significant roadways feed into and out of the span, including the Harlem River Drive and Major Deegan Expressway. NJDOT officials are urging motorists to take mass transit into New York if possible and consider an “alternate route” or travel during off-peak hours “…

NJDOT to Replace I-280 Bridge Decks Over Whippany River

Entire project expected to be complete by spring 2013.

NJDOT officials have announced the replacement of the Interstate 280 bridge decks in both directions over the Whippany River connecting Parsippany-Troy Hills and East Hanover in Morris County. “The replacement of these structurally deficient Interstate 280 bridge decks exemplifies NJDOT’s commitment to state-of-good repair investments that improve safety and help New Jersey compete for jobs,” said Commissioner Jim Simpson. Initial construction operations on the $5.2 million project will begin this week with NJDOT’s contractor, Scafar Contracting Inc., shifting the eastbound travel lanes to the south and westbound travel lanes to the north to establish a construction zone in the median of the highway. Temporary overnight single-lane …

Library Director: Construction Could Present Difficulties to Staff, Patrons

O'Brien expresses her concerns over space, timing issues.

The director of the Library of the Chathams discussed the various concerns she has about the ceiling and lighting construction project set to take place in the building in the near future. A portion of the library stacks where approximately 70,000 older books are kept will be off-limits to the public for two weeks while renovations are made to that area to improve the lighting and replace the current tiles that are falling apart. During Tuesday’s Board of Trustees meeting, Diane O’Brien said one of the major concerns is space utilization, especially finding a place to store books that had been taken out before the construction and can’t be placed back in the stacks. To alleviate this problem, she said the staff will probably take over the …

14 Trees Come Down at Memorial Park

Borough officials say 26 new trees will be planted in return, once park improvements are finished.

Crews from Tree King of Lansing, NJ cut down 14 trees from Memorial Park in Chatham Borough Friday. Borough Mayor Nelson Vaughan and Engineer Vincent J. DeNave said the tree cutting is the first necessary step to the planned improvements to Memorial Park and the Chatham Borough Municipal Pool. The project was awarded to Z-Tech Contracting Inc. for $840,224.50. It includes a new multi-purpose field between the two baseball fields, some grading and sodding and an additional 14 parking spaces. Changes to the pool include new decking, an elevated and enlarged kiddie pool and some retaining walls. Plans for the project, which are available for public viewing at the Chatham Borough Municipal Building, show that a total of 26 new trees will be …

High School Parking Lot Expansion Begins

Work underway to install 82 additional spaces before start of school year.

Construction of the parking lot expansion at Chatham High School was underway by Monday morning, with construction equipment, marking posts and a gravel path at the scene. Interim Superintendent Dennis Fyffe and Board of Education President Tom Belding said district officials met with John Ruschke, the engineer for Chatham Township, last Wednesday to discuss several outstanding "minor issues," according to Belding. Fyffe said the issues included a revised lighting plan for the parking lot, the wall height along a certain part of the lot, and, what Fyffe said is the biggest discussion item, stormwater management. Construction was scheduled to begin as soon as these issues were resolved. "The contractor is mobilizing equipment and …

Library Prepares for Renovation Work

The bids for the construction are due Aug. 3, and the work will begin about a month and a half later.

Four contractors attended Tuesday morning's pre-bid conference to inquire about renovations that need to be made at the Library of the Chathams. The companies will decide if they wish to take on the work that needs to be done to the ceiling in the stack area and submit bids within the next week. The bids will be opened on Aug. 3 and the work will be awarded to the lowest bidder. "The specifications (of the bids) were available on (July) 18," said Library Director Diane O'Brien. "This is where they ask questions, clarify anything they don't understand and have a chance to look at the site. The ones that decide to bid will come back next week with the bid." If none of the companies, which will remain anonymous until the bids are opened, …

Shunpike Field to Open June 4

Construction of the field has been plagued by delays.

The opening ceremonies for Shunpike Field will take place on June 4, Chatham Township Administrator Tom Ciccarone said Monday. A tentative earlier date of May 21 had been slated for the opening ceremony, but Ciccarone said that those plans were never finalized. "Unfortunately, people sometimes make public statements about tentative plans and they then get repeated," he said. Ciccarone said the tentative plan is for the opening day festivities to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. The Chatham Township Committee recently agreed to allow Fredco employees to work on the field on Sundays, but Ciccarone said there was no work done on the field on May 15, likely due to the weather. Ciccarone said the town had hoped that games …

Shunpike Field Ready in May, Committee Says

The installation of the turf fields is nearing its completion.

Township Mayor Nicole Hagner and Engineer John Ruschke reported to the committee Thursday that the construction at Shunpike Field should be "substantially complete" by the end of May. Ruschke estimated that the stone for the field would be installed before Tuesday and that 90 percent of the drainage is installed. He said that Fredco, the contractor for the installation of Shunpike Field, is committed to having the turf installed by the end of April and the rest of the project nearly completed one month later. By Friday residents should be able to see the green of the fields, Ruschke said. "We are certainly pushing the contractor hard to get the work done as quick as possible," Ruschke said. "When you push a contractor to work harder, they …

Drainage Work Continues on Hillside Avenue

The drainage improvement project running smoothly so far.

The reconstruction of Hillside Avenue continues, Borough Engineer Vincent J. DeNave said, with minimal complaints from the residents. "We've been working very closely with the residents," DeNave said. "I e-mail every day to the people along the project letting them know what's going to happen the following day." One Hillside Avenue resident, Freda Stabler, is an elderly woman without a personal e-mail account, according to DeNave. These e-mails, some of which Patch has received copies of, include house numbers where the construction crews will be working in front of, what the crews will be doing and what access residents will have for commuting, deliveries and other transportation issues. After sending the e-mail to all other residents, …

This has been a huge undertaking, and we're grateful for the speedy work schedule. Folks near Woods Lane seem to be at a slight disadvantage with "road closure" signs. The signs randomly cover the bases on River Rd. and Hillside, and Willow/Maple and Hillside, but on some days, there is no indication of a road closure for the folks in the middle, near Woods Lane.   more ›
