The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded a $19,300 grant to the principals of Lafayette Avenue School (LAS), Milton Avenue School (MAS), Washington Avenue School (WAS) and Southern Boulevard School (SBS) for the purchase of a STARLAB Portable Planetarium. STARLAB planetariums help students learn more about astronomy and the study of the planets and the solar system. The planetarium is a dome of opaque vinyl with a projector which displays images from space on the dome's interior. The images are displayed through STARLAB cylinders made of film which blocks all light except what is needed to display the images themselves. The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded an $11,000 grant to Chatham Middle School to fund the purchase of 16 Netbooks. The Netbook computers will be used by students throughout the school to promote and enhance writing across the curriculum. Principal Robert Accardi applied for the grant, along with eighth-grade English teachers Lisa McTague and Carmela Zack. Colleen Markley, the president of CEF, said the organization is "pleased to have provided these grants, which will benefit students throughout Chatham." The grant was made possible, Markley said, by the generosity of residents and businesses of the Chathams.
