Three residents of the Chathams received diplomas from Cornell University at the Ivy League school's commencement ceremony on May 27. Stephan was valedictorian at Chatham High School in 2008. This fall she will begin work on her PhD. in Ecological Engineerign at the State University of New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. Two other students, Tucker Doherty and Russell Silver-Fagen, were named to Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences' Dean's List for 2012 spring semester. Silver-Fagen also made the Dean's List in the 2011 fall semester. The College of Arts and Sciences is Cornell University's largest undergraduate college. At Villanova University's graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 20, eight local students were among those who received their diplomas. The names of the graduates are: Villanova also recently announced the names of students who made the Dean's List of their respective colleges for the 2011 fall semester. James Wilson, a resident of Chatham, recently graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., where he also was named to first honors on the 2012 spring semester Dean's List. To be eligible for first honors, students must have a grade point average of 3.8 or higher, of a maximum of 4.3 (all A+s). Wilson received his bachelor of arts degree in Management from Clark University on Sunday, May 20 as part of the school's 108th commencement excercises. As part of the graduation ceremony, Clark awarded 546 baccalaureate, 520 masters, and 26 doctoral degrees. Eight students at The College of New Jersey from Chatham earned a spot on the 2012 spring semester Dean's List: To make the Dean's List, a student must carry 12 or more credits that semester and have a 3.5 grade point average or above. The New Jersey university held their annual commencement ceremony in May
When Rider University celebrated their 147th annual commencement ceremony on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, one Chatham native was among those to receive their diplomas. Alexandria Gladstone received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Rider. She was one of over 1,200 to graduate in Rider's class of 2012. Two other Chatham natives were named to Rider's 2011 fall semester Dean's List: Located in Lawrenceville and Princeton, Rider University is regionally recognized as a top-tier institution. Two Chatham men were among the 513 students at Denison University to receive their diplomas at the school's 171st commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 13. Matthew Robert Kepler was awarded a bachelor of arts degree from President Dale Thomas Knobel. Kepler majored in economics. He studied in New Zealand for a semester with the College of Global Studies Program. Christopher Cole Black was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree. Black graduated with a double major in communication and international studies. He was senior class co-governor and a recipient of the Denison Alumni Award. Miami University of Ohio awarded 3,219 degrees to students at their spring commencement exercises on Saturday, May 5. Among those students were three natives of Chatham: One other Miami University student from Chatham, Brian Kingsley Ballard, was named to Miami University's Dean's List for the 2012 spring semester. Ballard also made the Dean's List in the fall 2011 semester, along with John Francis Armstrong, another Chatham native. The Dean's List is reserved for Miami University students who achieved a 3.5 or better grade point average. Such students are named to the dean's list to recognize their academic performance. Two natives of Chatham were among the 223 to earn their high school diplomas this year.
Saint Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City conferred diplomas onto two residents of Chatham at their 134th commencement ceremony, held at Saint Peter’s College on Sunday, June 9. Of the 223 graduates, two are Chatham residents. William Simson, son of Valerie and Walter Simson, was one of the two Chatham residents who graduated from St. Peter's. While a student, he played football, hockey and lacrosse and was a member of Marauder Nation. Simson was also a member of the Campus Ministry Team, and both led and attended retreats. He also traveled to Ecauador on a service mission. Simson plans to attend the University of Wisconsin. The Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams announced the award at Chatham High's commencement ceremony.
Emily Lazration, a member of Chatham High School's class of 2012, won a $1,000 college scholarship from the Democratic Scholarship Committee of the Chathams. To win the scholarship, Lazration wrote a 500-word essay about the most important issue presently facing the US and how the winner of the November presidential election should resolve it. According to Pam Huelster of the committee, Lazration wrote her essay on US foreign policy in the Middle East. She counseled increased diplomancy and economic sanctions and a decrease in military force. Lazration will attend Loyola University in Baltimore in the fall. Chatham native Matthew Tullman earned his bachelor of arts degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. on May 14. Tullman is a native of Chatham and an alumnus of Chatham High School. Emory encompasses nine academic divisions as well as the Michael C. Carlos Museum, The Carter Center, the Yerkes National Primate Research Center and Emory Healthcare, Georgia's largest and most comprehensive health care system.
