9 of 10 of CHS Grads Went to 4-Year Colleges

Most college-bound graduates want to look 'anywhere but New Jersey,' school counseling chief says.

More than 90 percent of 2012 graduates from Chatham High School went on to attend four-year colleges, and 84 percent of those students are attending competitive schools, according to Julie Patterson, the high school’s director of school counseling. Patterson explained during her annual graduate report at the Jan. 28 Board of Education meeting that 260 of the 287 graduates went to four-year-colleges, 18 went to two-year colleges, four are in the military service and one is going to a technical school. The other four went directly into employment, a number she said is high for Chatham High. Two Chathamites Graduate from Clemson

One Chatham man, Christopher Dart, graduated cum laude.

Two Local residents graduated from Clemson University on Dec. 20, 2012. They are: In all, 1,200 students received degrees at two winter graduation ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum. Graduates in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities; and College of Engineering and Science received their degrees at a morning ceremony. Those from the College of Business and Behavioral Science and the College of Health Education and Human Development received theirs in the afternoon ceremony. Advice for Class of 2013: Be a Role Model, Find Balance

Chatham High grads offer tips to current seniors on their final year before heading to college.

What advice would you offer to Chatham High School's class of 2013 to make the most of their senior year of high school? We asked several recent graduates from Chatham High to pass on their words of wisdom to this year's rising senior class. Here's what a few of them had to say: From Amanda Berntsen: First, I would tell the seniors to keep on studying and doing well in school. Even though most will be getting into colleges in the beginning of the year, it's still important to keep up grades. Colgate Awards Degrees to Chathamites

Chatham natives also earned academic honors this year.

Two natives of Chatham were among the 661 students who earned their undergraduate degrees from Colgate University this year. Theodore Ellis Ake Jr. graduated with a B.A. in German. Kirsten Marisa Kellstrom graduated with a B.A. in Spanish and Applied Mathematics from Colgate University. Colgate's class of 2012 ended their undergraduate careers with a graduation rate of 89.7%, which is among the highest in the nation. Mark H. Murphy '77, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, delivered an inspiring keynote address to a packed house. Kellstrom, along with fellow Chatham resident Erin Theresa Murray, received the Dean's Award for academic excellence in the 2011 fall semester. Chatham Resident Graduates from Gettysburg

Kyle Szajowkski completed his bachelor's degree in history; other residents make the college's Dean's List.

Chatham native Kyle Szajowkski graduated from Gettysburg College with his bachelor's degree in history. The commencement exercises took place May 20. The liberal arts college enrolls 2,600 undergraduate students. Notable alumni of Gettysburg College include Rhodes scholars and a Nobel laureate. Another Chatham native, Adam Weinbrom, was named to the college's 2012 spring semester Dean's Commendation List. The honor of being named to the commendation list is reserved for students who earn a grade point average of 3.33 or higher. Elizabeth Rouillard, also of Chatham, was named to Gettysburg College's Dean's Commendation List for the 2011 fall semester. Chathamites Graduate from Wake Forest U.

Four residents graduate, three make the spring semester Dean's List.

Four natives of the Chathams were among the 1,700 students who received their diplomas from Wake Forest University on May 21. Those four Chatham residents are: Murray also made the Dean's List in the spring 2012 semester, along with the following two fellow Chatham residents: Wake Forest University was founded in 1834 and is located in Winston-Salem, NC. The university includes a graduate school of arts and sciences, divinity school, and nationally ranked schools of law, medicine and business enrich our intellectual environment.

Chatham Woman Graduates U. of New Hampshire

Two Chatham natives made the Dean's List for the spring semester.

Chatham native Allison Woerner received her bachelor of arts degree in Communication from the University of New Hampshire during their commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 19. Two other Chatham residents were named to the Dean's List for the university's 2012 spring semester: Students named to the Dean's List at the University of New Hampshire have earned recognition through their superior scholastic performance. Highest Honors are awarded to students who earn a semester grade point average of 3.7 or better out of a possible 4.0. Students with a 3.5 to 3.69 average are awarded high honors and students whose grade point average is 3.2 through 3.49 are awarded honors. Chathamites Graduate from U. of Hartford

One graduate from Chatham also earned a spot on the Dean's List in her last semester.

Two natives of Chatham earned their bachelor's degrees from the University of Hartford this year: The two received their diplomas during the university's commencement ceremonies, which were held on Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20. Yohay was also named to the University of Hartford's Dean's List for the 2012 spring semester. Chartered in 1957 with the mission to be a "private university with a public purpose," the University of Hartford offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in the arts, the humanities, business, engineering and technology, education, and the health professions. The university's West Hartford, Conn. location hosts a student body of 7,000 representing 45 states and 58 countries.

Chatham Natives Graduate from Marist

Dean's List recipients, dance and theater recognitions also announced.

Four Chatham residents were among those who received their degrees at Marist College's commencement ceremonies the weekend of May 18 in Poughkeepsie, NY. Those local residents are: Marist also announced the students who were named to the Dean's List for the 2012 spring semester. Chatham residents included on the Dean's List are: Bernard, Ferenchiak, Galvin and Travers were also named to the Dean's List for the 2011 fall semester, along with: Two other Chatham residents excelled in Marist's art scene during the 2011-12 school year. Chatham Man Graduates Worcester Poly

Zach Garbowitz also made the Dean's List in his last semester.

Zach Garbowitz, a native of Chatham, graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Garbowitz was one of 1,077 graduates to receive a degree at WPI's 144th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12.
