'Carol' Filled With Hope, Innocence

The Chatham Community Players' production of "A Christmas Carol" fills the stage with endearing characters, wonderful performances.

The impact in any production of "A Christmas Carol" does not necessarily hinge on expert staging, excellent costuming, wonderful harmonic singing or shockingly good effects. Fortunately, for the Chatham Community Players, who premiered the show for the 15th time since 1988 on Friday, their unique musical production of the Charles Dickens classic does all of these things and does them well. However, the true impact lies in the depiction of innocence and the endearing qualities a show like this can produce, which is captured perfectly in the players' depiction of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly old curmudgeon who changes his outlook on life and the meaning of Christmas after meeting with three spirits who show him the errors of his ways and …

A 'Carol' New and Old

Chatham Community Players' production mixes veterans and fresh faces.

The Chatham Community Players will open their 15th annual production of "A Christmas Carol" on Friday at the Chatham Playhouse on North Passaic Avenue. The run at the Chatham Playhouse will continue through Dec. 19. This musical adaptation by Philip William McKinley features actors who have appeared in the show before, along with performers making their "Carol" debut. Among the returnees is director Bob Cline, who first staged the play in 2008. This followed many earlier successes with the troupe, including his initial assignment, "To Kill a Mockingbird" in 2002, as well as "Into The Woods," "Pippin" and "Crimes of the Heart."
