Several pieces of jewelry stolen from master bedroom, police said.
A bathroom window was smashed on a Susan Drive Home May 3 before someone burglarized the house, according to Chatham Township Police Lt. Maureen Kazaba. Sgt. Robert Scheetz and Ptl. Dave Schaffer arrived at the home around 10 p.m. and determined that entry was gained through the bathroom window, which was smashed. At that point, Kazaba said the master bedroom was entered and several pieces of jewelry were stolen. The Morris County Criminal Investigation unit is assisting with the investigation, which is continuing. Car crashed into large rock after owner reached in to take keys out of ignition.
A car owner was transported to Morristown Medical Center with injuries Sunday after police said she was rolled over by her own car on River Road. Sgt. Robert Scheetz, Ptl. Scott Herchick and Ptl. Anthony LoPorto responded to the Chatham Township road around 6:30 p.m. where the car crashed into a large rock, according to Chatham Township Police Lt. Maureen Kazaba. The owner of the car, who Kazaba did not name, had reached into the car to take out the keys that were in the ignition as the car was parked on a steep driveway. The car was still running at the time and began to roll down the driveway. Kazaba said the owner had held on to the car as it struck the rock, but it then overturned, rolling over her. Chatham Township's police department was one of 121 in NJ which knew the laws about anonymously filing complaints against officers, according to a recent report.
Chatham Township was one of 20 police departments in Morris County and 121 departments in the state which correctly answered five questions about filing anonymous complaints against an officer according to a report by New Jersey Public Radio and the ACLU. Chief Steven Hennelly, who took over the department on Feb. 1, said he had not yet had a chance to look into the full report, but that under former Chief John Paton's leadership and Hennelly's coordination of internal affairs investigations, complaints against officers have decreased in recent years. The total number of complaints and investigations against officers in 2010 was 12, with one still pending at the end of the year. In 2011, there were nine, and Hennelly said four of them were…

Initiative not coming to fruition 'one regret' for John Paton, who's retiring after 32 years with Chatham Township.
John Paton will step down at the end of this month after 32 years with the Chatham Township Police Department, four of them as chief. No replacement for Paton has been announced yet, but plans are in place for a decision to be made and a chief to take over soon. Eligible personnel include lieutenants and sergeants. "There won't be any lapse in service," he said. "In a department like this, nothing happens alone." A source of pride and regret for Paton is the community policing initiative, which he unveiled to the Chatham Township Committee after the destruction caused by Hurricane Irene and the late October 2011 snowstorm. John Paton's last day with the Chatham Township Police Department will be Thursday, Jan. 31.
It might be hard for some residents of Chatham Township to remember a time when John Paton was not an employee of the police department. "I started as a dispatcher 32 years ago, the first civilian dispatcher," Paton, 56, said. From there he became a patrolman, a detective, a sergeant and finally, in March 2009, the chief of the department. He retires just shy of four years as chief, which he regards as perfect timing. "Three to five years [as chief] is a good term to do things. Shorter than that you can't get anything done, longer than that you may become stagnant," he said. Scott Herchick, the president of Chatham Township PBA No. 170, said the Chatham Township Fire Department, the residents of Chatham and the police donated more than $1,200 in toys during the Chatham Township Police Department's 2012 toy drive. "We had an outstanding out-pour of support from the residents of Chatham," Herchick said. Besides toys collected from holiday parties and the Noe Pond Club, the township fire department used $1,200, collected from their Christmas tree sales, to purchase toys for the drive. Toys will go to local hospitals and to victims of Hurricane Sandy.
The Chatham Township Police Department have once again announced their annual Holiday Toy Drive to benefit childrens centers in local area hospitals and for victims of Hurricane Sandy in southern New Jersey. Scott Herchick, the president of Chatham Township PBA No. 170, said in past years the PBA has donated toys to Mountainside Hospital, Morristown Memorial Hospital and Overlook Hospital. This year they hope to collect enough toys to also give to families in the state affected by Hurricane Sandy. "There are some contacts we have with different police and fire departments down there," Herchick said. "They'll actually assist us with getting stuff to the families." No one was transported to local hospitals, police said.
A car accident in Chatham Township Sunday evening resulted in four injuries, police said Monday. Chatham Township Police Lt. Steven Hennelly said the accident occurred at the intersection of River Road and Southern Boulevard at 8:28 p.m. Sunday. According to Hennelly, there were four injuries in the accident, but no one involved was transported to area hospitals. Chatham Patch will update this story as further information becomes available.

Officers from around the country ride to honor fallen police men and women.
The 2012 Police Unity Tour launched the first leg of their four-day journey to Washington, D.C. Wednesday. The tour starts each year in Florham Park and ends with a ceremony at the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial and Museum. The first tour was organized in 1997 by Florham Park Police Chief Patrick P. Montuore. Sgt. Daniel Papa of the Chatham Township Police Department rides in the tour will ride in honor of Sgt. James Chapin of Chattanooga, Tenn. Chapin died on April 2, 2011, from a gunshot wound he received at the scene of an armed robbery. Chapin, who was married with two children, was a 27-year veteran of the police department. When he arrives in D.C., Papa will meet Chapin's family members and escort them to a candlelight …

Donation fulfills long-time need.
When the Chatham Township PBA started their fundraising sticker drive this year, they did not expect to get a laptop computer. Michael Giannone, the president of Chatham Township PBA Local No. 170, said the owners and manager of The Chatham Club contacted him after learning of this year's fundraiser and asked if the PBA needed anything special. Giannone said Chris Rutgers, the facility manager, "[wanted] to do something extra this year and preferred to make a purchase of something tangible that would benefit our group over the long term." After discussing their needs with the PBA, Rutgers and the club owners purchased a new laptop for the PBA in March.
