Monday is celebrated as a state and federal holiday in celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year, Martin Luther King Day coincides with Inauguration Day, which is celebrated on Jan 20—or, if Jan. 20 should be a Sunday, on the Monday following. President Barack Obama was technically sworn in for his second term at noon Sunday, but formal observances will be held Monday in Washington, DC. This is the first time in two years students in the School District of the Chathams have been able to stay home in observance of the holiday.
