Meredith Wilson's classic musical comes performed on Chatham Middle School's stage.
A cast of 67 students from Chatham Middle School will take the stage Sunday for a production of "The Music Man ... Jr." Students will perform an abbreviated versiond of Meredith Wilson's classic musical at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday after the Friday show was postponed because of the winter storm. Though the show is shortened, director Alison Caravano promises the soul of the show remains. The cast, Caravano said, "is one of the most gifted groups of young people I have ever had the privilege of directing." The students have rehearsed two hours each day since November. The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded an $11,000 grant to Chatham Middle School to fund the purchase of 16 Netbooks. The Netbook computers will be used by students throughout the school to promote and enhance writing across the curriculum. Principal Robert Accardi applied for the grant, along with eighth-grade English teachers Lisa McTague and Carmela Zack. Colleen Markley, the president of CEF, said the organization is "pleased to have provided these grants, which will benefit students throughout Chatham." The grant was made possible, Markley said, by the generosity of residents and businesses of the Chathams. Mark and Michael Kellstrom, Justin Hovi and Eric Liotta from Chatham High School and Ryan Maher from Chatham Middle School took their baritones and tubas to Rockefeller Center Sunday for the annual celebration of TubaChriistmas. The five Chatham natives joined 460 other musicians with their tubas, sousaphones, baritones and euphoniums for the annual celebration in front of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. Despite going without power for days, 12 staff members from the School District of the Chathams are ready to give their time to fight blood cancers.
After school lets out Friday, 12 teachers and administrators from the School District of the Chathams will gather their running gear and travel to Philadelphia to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Marathon. The Board of Education meet Monday will address the missed school days.
Primary schools in the School District of the Chathams will be closed Monday due to lingering effects from Tropical Storm Sandy. Lafayette Avenue School, Chatham Middle School and Chatham High School will open as usual while Southern Boulevard School, Washington Avenue School and Milton Avenue School will be closed. Superintendent Michael LaSusa said, "Our intention is to provide instruction to the primary students in some way on Tuesday." Chatham Middle School students were delayed in their project, originally intended for the Week of Respect earlier this month, because of weather.
Chatham Middle School (CMS) Assistant Principal Robert Gardella and Physical Education instructors led students in an outdoor art project Tuesday, in which students pledged mutual respect and acceptance to each other. The project was originally planned for the week of Oct. 1, which was the state-wide Week of Respect against harassment, intimidation and bullying at CMS. Rain and other inclement weather delayed the project, however, and Gardella was forced to wait. It was all sunshine on Tuesday, though, as students used their P.E. classes to draw and color in the words "Respect," "Character" and "Acceptance" in the traffic oval in front of Chatham Middle School. As the Week of Respect comes to a close, Chatham Middle School Students have a reminder of their commitment to stand together againts bullying. The words "We Stand Together" were spelled out with fence caps in the chain link fence at Haas Field, where students and staff can see them daily. Several staff members at Chatham Middle School have seen their spouses, children, friends and colleagues affected by blood cancers.
As 14 staff members from the School District of the Chathams train and raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Marathon in November, they do so with the knowledge that they are not merely serving a good cause. They are also showing direct support for their colleagues, their families and their friends who have struggled with these diseases in their own lives. "We have people that we work with [whose] immediate family currently undergo the challenge of these diseases," Peter Trebour, assistant principal at Chatham Middle School, said. Chatham Middle School takes respect very seriously. Students and faculty at the middle school begin their second annual Week of Respect Monday. The week fills the school's obligations under the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights, which Gov. Chris Christie signed into law over a year ago. Events this year are coordinated by Assistant Principal Robert Gardella. The Week of Respect officially started Friday in homeroom, when the school aired a video as part of the morning homeroom introducing the Week of Respect. After school, a banner with the words "I Stand Against Bullying" was hung in the cafeteria.
