Education Foundation Editor Offers Thanks

After Taste of Chatham's success, Colleen Markley says community support makes foundation's mission possible.

To The Editor: On behalf of the Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) Board of Trustees I want express our sincere gratitude for the incredible support for this year’s 12th annual Taste of Chatham.   The Taste of Chatham is our single largest fundraising event of the year.  Proceeds from the event will go towards providing grants to support innovative and creative educational programs and special projects for the School District of the Chathams’ approximately 4,100 K-12 students enrolled in the District’s six public schools. Since its inception in 1997, the CEF has distributed more than $600,000 to develop and support more than 250 educational programs and special projects and last year alone we distributed over $66,000. Chatham Education Foundation's annual fundraiser was held for the first time in over a year.

The Chatham Education Foundation held their 12th Taste of Chatham fundraiser Friday night. This event which features dishes from some of Chatham's favorite eateries, was moved to spring for the first time this year. Every year before this, the event has been held in October. Funds from Taste of Chatham help the Chatham Education Foundation's mission of providing private funding to supplement public education in town. So far this year, the foundation has awarded over $41,000 in grants to the School District of the Chathams. Taste of Chatham Moves to New Day

The annual fundraiser will be held at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park on Friday.

Get ready to taste some of the best Chatham has to offer. The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) will have their annual fundraiser, Taste of Chatham, in March this year. This year's Taste of Chatham, the 12th ever, will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8. This will be the first time the event has taken place since October 2011. CEF decided to move the event to spring, when many other towns such as Morristown and Madison have their events, and from a Monday to a Friday. Education Foundation Awards $9,600 Grant

The grant will go to purchase the Pearsons Education Developmental Reading Assessment Management System.

The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded a grant to the School District of the Chathams of $9,600 to go toward the purchase of a Pearsons Education Developmental Reading Assessment Management System. The system will help give assessment-driven reading instruction to students in grades 1 through 5, and will help teachers assess student reading levels. Faculty at Lafayette Avenue School, Milton Avenue School, Southern Boulevard School and Washington Avenue School will be able to use the system. The grant request was submitted by the district's Supervisor of English Language Arts K-5 Helen S. Comba and by the principals of the aforementioned schools. School Budget to be Unveiled Monday

An open finance meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Chatham Middle School.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams will hold an open finance meeting to discuss the proposed 2013-14 school budget at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Last year's tax levy rose by 2.3 percent for the school budget, with the 0.3 percent over the two percent tax cap permitted because of dispensations for specific reasons such as the rising cost of health care and growth in the district. The school board will have to approve the budget before it can go for public vote on Tuesday, April 16. Since the borough and township school districts merged in 1988, the public has never failed to pass a school budget. Planetarium Coming to Schools Thanks To Education Foundation's $19K Grant

The mobile planetarium will be used at Chatham's elementary schools.

The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded a $19,300 grant to the principals of Lafayette Avenue School (LAS), Milton Avenue School (MAS), Washington Avenue School (WAS) and Southern Boulevard School (SBS) for the purchase of a STARLAB Portable Planetarium. STARLAB planetariums help students learn more about astronomy and the study of the planets and the solar system. The planetarium is a dome of opaque vinyl with a projector which displays images from space on the dome's interior. The images are displayed through STARLAB cylinders made of film which blocks all light except what is needed to display the images themselves. $11K Grant to Brings Netbooks to Middle School

Education Foundation's grant will go toward purchase to enhance student writing.

The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) awarded an $11,000 grant to Chatham Middle School to fund the purchase of 16 Netbooks. The Netbook computers will be used by students throughout the school to promote and enhance writing across the curriculum. Principal Robert Accardi applied for the grant, along with eighth-grade English teachers Lisa McTague and Carmela Zack. Colleen Markley, the president of CEF, said the organization is "pleased to have provided these grants, which will benefit students throughout Chatham."  The grant was made possible, Markley said, by the generosity of residents and businesses of the Chathams. CEF Distributes $66K in Grants to Chatham Schools

Grants will help enhance education within Chatham's public schools.

As the 2011-12 school year comes to a close, the Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) announced its final grant winners of the year. Throughout the school year, CEF awarded $66,000 in grants to 26 programs and special projects within the School District of the Chathams. Brooklake Country Club is the scene of this year's event.

The Chatham Education Foundation held their annual Taste of Chatham fundraiser Monday at the Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. Funds raised by the Chatham Education Foundation are given to teachers and schools of the School District of the Chathams in the form of grants and donations. In the last academic year, the foundation funded more than 60 programs. The Taste of Chatham fundraiser is the foundation's largest fundraising event and is now in its 11th year.

27 School Projects Receive CEF Grants

The Chatham Education Foundation gave $60,000 in grants over the 2010-11 academic year.

The Chatham Education Foundation (CEF) said Friday the total amount of funds the organization distributed to The School District of the Chathams over the last 12 months was $60,000, a similar amount to how much they gave over the 2009-2010 academic year. The funds are distributed in grants and donations for special school and educational programs in Chatham schools that the district is not able to fund. President Colleen Markley said CEF funds "enable [teachers and principals] to continue to be innovative and creative educators in the face of budget cuts."
