Councilman James Collander said almost half the accidents in Chatham Borough are caused by distracted drivers.
Drivers distracted by cell phones, grooming, eating or other activities while driving caused about half of all car accidents in Chatham Borough over the last three years, according to a report by Councilman James Collander at the Chatham Borough Council meeting Monday. Collander, the chair of the Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Planning Committee, said of the 952 car crashes investigated in 2010, 2011 and 2012, 438, or 46.01 percent of those, were caused by distracted drivers, and most of those are distracted by their mobile phones. "There might be a few that are eating and grooming," Collander said, "but most people are on their phones." A Madison woman was transported to Morristown Medical Center after a four-car accident in Chatham Wednesday. Patrolman Wayne Shivers investigated a four-car accident on Main Street near Brooklake Road shortly after 4 p.m., according to police. Shivers found a 2010 GMC driven by Anna Coviello, 55, of Chatham, was traveling westbound when she crashed into the back of a stopped car, police said. That car was pushed into the car in front of it, which, in turn, was pushed into a fourth car which was stopped in front of it, according to police. The drivers of the other three cars were Marilyn Burack, 53, of Livingston, Meredith Gondo, 35, of Madison, and Kalliope DeCavalles, 77, of Madison, police said. Gondo was transported to Morristown …

Borough police directed Main Street traffic for several hours Tuesday.
Chatham Borough Police had to direct traffic Tuesday after a car accident knocked out the power to the traffic light at Main Street and North Passaic Avenue. On Jan. 10 at 11:27 a.m., patrols responded to an accident involving a truck at the intersection of Main and Passaic, police said. Patrolman Brian Maher determined a box truck driven by Timmy Wilson, 31, of Rochester, N.Y. ran off the road and struck an electrical box for the traffic light, according to police. Power was knocked out to the traffic light at the intersection for several hours, police said. Wilson stated he fell asleep while driving and lost control of the truck, according to police. Chatham Borough Police said they responded to three car accidents between Friday and Sunday, one involving a driver under the influence of alcohol. At 5:28 p.m. Friday, patrols responded to the intersection of Lafayette Avenue and Kings Road on a report of a two-car crash, according to a statement by police. Patrolman Brian Maher determined that a 2009 Lexus driven by Stephen Doherty, 52, of Chatham Township, was attempting to turn right from Kings Road onto Lafayette Avenue, police said. Doherty struck a 2010 Honda driven by Richard Connor, 52, of Chatham Borough, who was traveling north on Lafayette Avenue, according to police. Careless driving summonses issued in three of four accidents.
Chatham Borough Police released a statement Wednesday detailing four car accidents took place between Sept. 15 and Sept. 19. September 15 Patrolman Daniel Walsh investigated a two-car accident on Watchung Avenue at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, according to police. A 2003 Ford driven by John Riccio, 47, of Rockaway was stopped in traffic when he was rear-ended by a 2002 Chevrolet driven by Allyson Cunningham, 47, of Verona, police said. There were no injuries reported and Cunningham was issued a summons for careless driving, police said. September 16 Sgt.
