Labor Contracts to Save Borough More Than $1M

Police and DPW unions negotiated to save taxpayers money without losing a single job.

Chatham Borough Administrator Robert Falzarano said the new contracts for Police and Public Works employees, approved Tuesday by the Chatham Borough Council, will collectively save the borough more than $1 million over the next four years. "I have to compliment our two groups," Falzarano said. "We accomplished all of these negotiations ..with no attorneys involved, so the borough saved money there as well." Both groups will begin paying into their pension and health benefits under the legislation passed last year by Gov. Chris Christie, phased in over the four-year life of the contract. Officials: Don't Worry About Low-Flying Helicopters

Jersey Central recently inspected power lines in Chatham Borough.

Chatham Borough residents should not worry at the sight of low-flying helicopters in the area, according to Borough Administrator Bob Falzarano. "Jersey Central [Power & Light, JCP&L] has been conducting aerial inspection of the power lines," Falzarano said. JCP&L inspects power lines by flying about 300 to 400 feet overhead, searching for tree encroachment into the easement or mechanical issues, according to a fax from JCP&L to the borough, dated Aug. 1. "Usually we don't get notice that far in advance, so I try to get it up as soon as possible," Falzarano said. According to the fax, inspections took place on Aug. 1 and 2.
