School Budget Could Include Additional Questions

The board will vote on whether to approve a 2013-14 budget with a second and third question for the voters.

An Open Finance Meeting for the Board of Education will take place Monday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will cover the proposed 2013-14 budget, which will likely include a second question for security improvements. Superintendent Michael LaSusa proposed several options to the Board of Education for the new year's school budget. When the board meets Monday they will vote on whether to approve a budget with a second and third question attached. The table below shows the total allowable tax increase for the upcoming school year The budget as drafted calls a total of $55,409,234 to be raised in local taxes apart from the two separate proposals. Staffing, Security Top Priorities for Next Year's Budget

Growing enrollment requires a growth in facilities and staff, and a commensurate investment in extracurricular activities.

LaSusa proposed several scenarios with tax levy increases from 2.14 to 3.41 percent, plus one option with a second question for increasing school security. Priorities: Staffing, Activities ... School District Could Offer 2nd Question on Budget

Superintendent Michael LaSusa proposed three different paths for the upcoming school budget.

Dr. Michael LaSusa, superintendent of the School District of the Chathams, proposed three different potential paths for the Board of Education to take in planning the 2013-14 school budget, including putting a second question to the voters for enhancements to school security. His proposed scenarios call for a budget increase of between 2.14 percent to 3.41 percent, or allow the Board of Education to propose a different path. The board will select a budget plan and vote on it on March 11 following another Open Finance Committee meeting. 2 File for Single Borough Seat on Board of Education

The two incumbents from Chatham Township also filed.

Chatham Borough residents will have a contested election for the Board of Education this year. For the single, open seat representing the borough, incumbent Philip Franz filed a petition to run. Franz was appointed to the seat after Stephen Barna resigned in September. He is challenged by Edward DiFiglia, who announced his candidacy on Feb. 19. In Chatham Township, John Nonnenmacher and Matthew Gilfillan both filed to keep their seats on the board. School Budget to be Unveiled Monday

An open finance meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Chatham Middle School.

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams will hold an open finance meeting to discuss the proposed 2013-14 school budget at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Last year's tax levy rose by 2.3 percent for the school budget, with the 0.3 percent over the two percent tax cap permitted because of dispensations for specific reasons such as the rising cost of health care and growth in the district. The school board will have to approve the budget before it can go for public vote on Tuesday, April 16. Since the borough and township school districts merged in 1988, the public has never failed to pass a school budget. Borough Native DiFiglia Files for School Board Election

DiFiglia said improved public access to meetings is high on his priority list.

Chatham Borough resident Ed DiFiglia said he filed a petition to run for the Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams Tuesday. DiFiglia, 30, is chair of the Chatham Borough Democrats. He also volunteers on the borough's Environmental  Commission, the Open Space and Historic Conservancy Advisory Committee and the Municipal Alliance Committee of the Chathams. He first moved to Chatham in 1989 as a child and attended both Washington Avenue School (WAS) and Chatham Middle School. He majored in journalism at Saint Michael's College and holds a master's degree in legislative affairs from George Washington University. No Petitions Filed Yet in School Board Elections

Incumbents Nonnenmacher, Gilfillan and Franz said they intend to run for School District of the Chathams seats

The Board of Education of the School District of the Chathams approved a resolution Monday setting school board elections to take place from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 16. Three seats are up for election this year, one representing Chatham Borough and two representing Chatham Township. Matthew Gilfillan and John Nonnenmacher currently hold the two seats representing the township. Phil Franz holds the seat from the borough, the same seat which was vacated by Stephen Barna in September. All three said they intend to run for re-election, but as of Monday, Business Administrator Peter Daquila said, "no petitions have been filed." The board proposes to hold elections from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16. 9 of 10 of CHS Grads Went to 4-Year Colleges

Most college-bound graduates want to look 'anywhere but New Jersey,' school counseling chief says.

More than 90 percent of 2012 graduates from Chatham High School went on to attend four-year colleges, and 84 percent of those students are attending competitive schools, according to Julie Patterson, the high school’s director of school counseling. Patterson explained during her annual graduate report at the Jan. 28 Board of Education meeting that 260 of the 287 graduates went to four-year-colleges, 18 went to two-year colleges, four are in the military service and one is going to a technical school. The other four went directly into employment, a number she said is high for Chatham High. The School District of the Chathams has a candidate kit for those interested in running for the Board of Education this April. Three seats are up for election this year, one representing Chatham Borough and two representing Chatham Township.
