Water Carnival a Big Splash for Chatham Kids

Annual event allows children to show their parents what they've learned in swim classes.

Amy Nauta, the pool director at Memorial Pool, hosted the annual Water Carnival Thursday night. Children ages 4 to 8 who take swimming lessons can show off what they've learned at the water carnival. Skills include basics, such as kicking and pattling for the 4-year-olds, to breastroke, backstroke and freestyle for the 7- and 8-year-olds. Nauta said the Water Carnival has been an annual tradition "for as long as I've been here, so at least 25, 26 years." This year, however, the pool had a record number of 59 students take lessons. Laura Schaefer is the assistant director, and Paul Pender is the head lifeguard. Other lifeguards and swim instructors include Brian Schaefer, Joe Mascolo and Jess Carey.

Noodles and Rafts at Borough Float Day

Chatham residents enjoy "Float Day" at the Chatham Borough Municipal Pool.

Chatham residents enjoyed "Float Day" at the Chatham Borough Pool on Sunday afternoon from 4 to 5 p.m. Kids brought tubes, rafts, and even an inflatable sea dragon to the event. The hot and sunny day was filled with excitment and fun for both parents and children alike. Float Days throughout the summer have experienced high rates of participation, according to lifeguard Amy Nauta. "We've had a ton of people coming to the Float Days the last few weeks," she said. The Municipal Pool holds Float Days each Sunday afternoon.
