Editor's note: The following is the complete text of the commencement address given by Board of Education President Thomas K. Belding at the Chatham High School 2012 graduation ceremony on June 21, 2012.   You of course know the names Francois Rabelais, Anton Chekov, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Michael Crichton. They were famous writers. Did you also know they were medical doctors? These guys not only thought and worked outside the box – as you will probably also have to do. Through their works we know they were gifted and talented – particularly in understanding people, and communicating. You are also gifted and talented – each one of you – more so than you may realize. And like these famous doctor-writers, whatever career you go into, …

Chatham High Grads Move Onward and 'Up'

Graduating seniors celebrated the 2012 baccalaureate with the theme 'Up,' after the Pixar movie.

Members of Chatham High School's class of 2012 gathered at Corpus Christi Church Wednesday to celebrate the interfaith baccalaureate service. The theme of this year's baccalareate was "Onward and UP-ward," a play on the Pixar film "Up" about the adventures life has in store, even for those who may think all their adventures are behind them. Graduating seniors from each faith community in the class were invited to plan and participate in the baccalaureate. Sana Sulit gave the welcoming address. Anusha Sinha sang a Hindi prayer chant, Gulaba Khan read a passage of Muslim scripture and Josh Wolpert and Julie Messing read a Hebrew blessing. School choirs provided the music for the service.

Should Screaming Be Allowed at Graduation?

What is the proper etiquette when it comes to graduation?

All across Chatham, students, families and educators are getting ready for the Chatham High School graduation ceremony Thursday. But no doubt at least some are dreading these ceremonies. Why? Because while graduation ceremonies around the country used to be highly structured classy affair, many have disintegrated into hours of clapping, whistling and, mostly, screaming. Screaming has gotten so out of hand that at least some schools have had to put the kibosh on all the noise. Indeed, recently, a South Carolina woman said police escorted her out of her daughter's graduation for cheering and then charged her with disorderly conduct. According to graduation etiquette websites—and there are several—you should hold your applause until every …

Lauren, The fact that you even posted this story is frightening. It appears as though you are attempting to cause controversy. The comedic thing is as soon as people's "debating" escalates, you will close it down. Please stop publishing garbage stories and maybe focus on the achievements and excitement that surround graduation instead of trying to cause a stir.   more ›

What's the Best Graduation Gift?

Share your stories of the best and worst presents ever.

With graduation season underway, parents across the country are scrambling for just the right gift to congratulate their high school and college grads. While there may have been a time when the ideal graduation gift was a nice watch or a new suit, today's grads may be thinking more along the lines of smartphones and tablets. But is a gadget necessarily the best way to say congrats? Or is a more personal touch called for? For my part, the best graduation gift I ever received was probably the one I underestimated the most—at least, I did at the time. For my high school graduation, a family friend gave me a hot-pink toolset, complete with a heavy-duty hammer, Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers, nails, painter's tape and several other items …
