Casey Gill Shines on Muhlenberg Lacrosse Team

The college sophomore finished the 2012 season among the team's top 10 scorers.

Muhlenbrg College sophomore Casey Gill distinguished himself on his college 2012 mens lacrosse team. According to Andrew Wible, the assistant sports information director at Muhlenberg, Gill "set career highs with three goals and 4 points," which put him among the team's top 10 scorers. Gill, a 2010 graduate of Chatham High School, was one of two on the lacrosse team to score multiple points against Gettysburg College, a nationally-ranked team. Muhlenberg finished the season 2-12, "including six losses by three goals or less," Wible said. Nine of their opponents played in the postseason, including Montclair State University, which won their conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Montclair State was one of the two …

Girls Golf Team Builds Camaraderie, Numbers in Second Season

And still stay under par.

In 2011, the co-ed golf team at Chatham High School branched into separate teams for boys and girls so the girls could get a chance to play. One season later, the team's numbers have risen to 16 players and the girls started their 2012 season with four straight wins. Captains Caroline McCann and Chelsea Flanigan, Coach Joe Gaba and player Katie Howard-Johnson talked to Chatham Patch about the team's sophomore season, cooperation and support within the team and the advantages of a girls team. The girls golf team is funded by parents, the Chatham Athletic Foundation and the Chatham Booster Club. Editor's note: A previous version of this article stated the girls golf team was entirely parent-funded. The article has been corrected and Chatham …

Chatham Residents Run in N.J. Marathon

About 13,000 total racers participate in 2012 race.

The many changes to the 2012 New Jersey Marathon including a new starting location and time, did not stop a huge number of runners and spectators from flocking to Oceanport and Long Branch on Sunday morning. About 13,000 participants enjoyed a perfect day and raced through the streets of several local towns as they raced to a finish on the Promenade in Long Branch. The race's new starting location of Monmouth Park eased parking and some traffic concerns for participants, and a shuttle service to and from the race track helped tired runners and spectators reach their destinations. Jason Page, of Durham, N.C., won the full marathon with a lightning fast time of 2:33:13. He finished first in a group of 2,304 runners. The half marathon, which …

Girls Camp Promises More Than Lacrosse Skills

A summer camp aims to teach girls lacrosse and build self-esteem. Scholarships are available.

Getting and keeping kids involved in team sports is a challenge for many parents — and even more so for parents of girls. "Researchers have found that anywhere from 30-70% of kids drop out of sports by the time they are 13 years old, and the number one reason why they quit is that they aren't having any fun," notes Dr. Richard D. Ginsburg, sport psychology consultant. Laura Gump, the co-founder of Sum It Up For Girls Lacrosse — based in Summit, NJ — started the company in 2007 to offer summer camps and clinics that would encourage teamwork and promote positive self-esteem among young girls. Above all, her emphasis is to teach the skills of lacrosse through games and activities designed to remind the girls that sports are supposed to be …

Family Helps Martinek Make Giant Decision

Hopatcong's football star consulted those closest to him before making the biggest decision of his life.

It was late, and inside it was loud. The downstairs living room, filled with family and close friends, had grown from a chatty gathering to a party where the conversations were boisterous and predicated on the same question: Where was he going? Outside, the family talked. Because for Joe Martinek to do this, it had to be the same way he made his last life-changing decision—the choice to take a full Rutgers football scholarship after leaving Hopatcong High School as the state's all-time leading rusher. He needed his family's advice. So when the discussion ended and they walked into the kitchen, Martinek went into another room to have a final talk with his agent, Don Henderson. When he emerged a bit later and told his family he had signed …

Leto the 'Whole Package' for Chatham High

Senior midfielder records most goals in team history, continues to power Cougars.

With more than 200 career goals, Chatham High senior Jaclyn Leto typically draws the strongest defenses on the lacrosse field. Still, the midfielder has managed to become the team's first player to score 219 career goals, 56 of them already this season. "I have always tried to use my speed in the midfield to get down to the eight and utilize my speed to drive it in," Leto said. "We are really fortunate to work against such a great goalie like Hannah Reader.  It really helps our whole offense practice their shots." The Dartmouth-bound Leto has continued to take her game to the next level. "Jaclyn is the whole package," coach Deb Marriot said. "She is just a great tenacious lacrosse player.  She has a nose for the goal.  She is a great team …

Poll: Was BOE Right to Replace Harvey Cohen?

Ice hockey assistant coach to take over as head coach in upcoming season.

After 38 years, Chatham High School will have a new ice hockey coach. The Board of Education approved Frank Gilberti as the new head coach of the team by a vote of 7-0 with one abstention. Gilberti has served as the assistant coach for several years. Cohen retired on Dec. 31, 2011 because of a board policy that did not allow the athletic director to coach a sports team. Cohen served as athletic director at Chahtam High since 1997. The board approved Cohen as the hockey coach for the 2011-12 season. This year, Board Member Rich Connors said, the board opted to interview several candidates, including Cohen, for the position of head coach. Cohen "applied for the position [of hockey coach], and went through the whole interview process," …
